About the Role

APTIM Environmental & Infrastructure, LLC is seeking an entry-level Environmental Scientist to participate in a variety of environmental compliance tasks in support of national retail client programs. This position will support environmental permitting, RCRA and state hazardous waste compliance, non-RCRA waste, regulated waste, hazardous materials management, spill prevention, aboveground storage tank compliance, DOT compliance, environmental reporting, and related data management activities.

The successful candidate will primarily work in an office-based environment in Lenexa, KS but will also require travel to retail client facilities to conduct environmental compliance reviews, site visits, inspections, audits, photographic documentation, operational evaluations, and gather related data.

Responsibilities

Execute and manage various work scopes while meeting project schedules and budgets.
Work independently and as part of a project team, adjusting to changing conditions.
Conduct environmental regulatory research and applicability reviews.
Support preparation of environmental permits, plans, reports, regulatory submissions, and client deliverables.
Support RCRA and state hazardous waste, non-RCRA waste, regulated waste, hazardous materials, SPCC, AST, DOT, and related environmental compliance programs.
Conduct retail client facility site visits to collect environmental compliance information and document site conditions.
Perform environmental compliance inspections, facility walkthroughs, audits, and site assessments related to hazardous waste, hazardous materials, stormwater, aboveground storage tanks, spill prevention, and other environmental requirements.
Gather field data, photographs, operational information, and site observations to support permitting, reporting, compliance evaluations, and corrective action recommendations.
Interface with client personnel at corporate, regional, facility, and store levels, and communicate with regulatory agencies as needed.
Prepare site visit summaries, inspection reports, data tables, and environmental compliance documentation under the guidance of senior technical staff.
Manage environmental compliance data in spreadsheets, client systems, SharePoint, and other project tools.
Perform quality assurance/quality control reviews of environmental documentation, site information, reports, and regulatory submittals.
Manage time effectively to ensure quality work products are prepared to meet project deadlines.
Apply knowledge and skills to a wide range of standard and nonstandard environmental compliance situations.
Follow defined processes explicitly while identifying and accommodating new or changing scenarios.
Travel to client locations throughout the United States, including occasional overnight travel, to support site visit needs.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, a core science such as geology, chemistry, physics, or biology, engineering, or a related area.
0–2 years of related work experience.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
Strong organizational skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft applications such as MS Excel, MS Word, SharePoint Online, Teams, and Outlook, with the ability to learn other software applications.
Ability to conduct regulatory research and summarize findings clearly and accurately.
Ability to work independently while following established project procedures and quality expectations.
Willingness to work in the field and travel to complete work for retail client facility site visits.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience or training regarding environmental compliance and related federal and state environmental regulations.
Experience or coursework related to RCRA and state hazardous waste, non-RCRA waste, regulated waste, hazardous materials, spill prevention, aboveground storage tanks, stormwater, DOT, or environmental permitting.
Prior internship, consulting, field assessment, facility inspection, audit, or environmental compliance experience.
Experience supporting retail, commercial, industrial, or multi-site client programs.
Ability and willingness to travel to retail client facilities at regional or nationwide locations to conduct environmental compliance reviews, site assessments, inspections, and related project support activities.
Experience preparing technical summaries, compliance documentation, inspection notes, data tables, or client-ready environmental deliverables.
Experience using SharePoint, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, client databases, environmental management systems, or other data management tools.

Pay

As of the date of this posting, the pay range for this position is $27.88–$29.81 per hour. Compensation depends on several factors including experience, education, key skills, geographic location, client requirements, external market competitiveness, and internal equity.
