About the role

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) is hiring two (2) Environmental Protection Dispatchers within the Environmental Conservation Police (EnCon) Division of the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation (BOR) in Hartford.

Responsibilities

  • Operates radio communication equipment and receives and dispatches radio messages on an assigned shift;
  • Provides a communications link for personnel in the field or agency headquarters;
  • Relays information and requests for assistance to appropriate jurisdictions;
  • Operates computer equipment;
  • Operates voter system to determine radio transmission capability;
  • Advises other agencies on incidents of special concern;
  • Dispatches emergency response teams of the agency;
  • Operates computer assisted dispatch (CAD), National Crime Information Center (NCIC), and Connecticut On-Line Law Enforcement Communications Teleprocessing (COLLECT) systems;
  • Maintains initial incident report;
  • Maintains written records and logs of shift activity;
  • Interprets and relays information to field personnel;
  • Contacts and may coordinate with agency units and/or agencies such as Federal Aviation Administration, Coast Guard, State Police and local public safety agencies;
  • Interprets and applies state statutes and regulations pertaining to environmental protection issues;
  • Independently responds to calls from the general public;
  • Provides general information or referrals to the general public;
  • Determines and evaluates whether emergency or non-emergency situations exist, prioritizes and takes appropriate action;
  • May prepare reports;
  • Performs related duties as required.

Requirements

  • One (1) year of experience in dispatching and operation of communication equipment;
  • Experience with computer assisted dispatch (CAD), National Crime Information Center (NCIC), and CT On-Line Law Enforcement Communications Teleprocessing (COLLECT) systems;
  • Experience interpreting and applying conservation enforcement state and federal laws, statutes, regulations, and procedural guidelines;
  • Experience managing competing deadlines and adapting to changing priorities in a work environment;
  • Experience extracting information from individuals during emergency response communications;
  • Experience making independent decisions while evaluating emergency and non-emergency response situations.

Qualifications

  • Must have and maintain certification as a Telecommunicator;
  • Must receive certification in National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and Connecticut On-Line Law Enforcement Teleprocessing (COLLECT) systems within three (3) months of appointment;
  • May be required to work a schedule that includes weekends, evenings and holidays.

Pay

$52,741* - $69,162/year (*New state employees start at the minimum)

Schedule

  • Second Shift: Thursday through Monday, 3:00 pm â 11:00 pm
  • Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, 3:30 pm â 11:30 pm
  • Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, 3:30 pm â 11:30 pm
  • Third Shift (Weekends): Friday 11:30 pm â Saturday 7:30 am
  • Saturday 11:30 pm â Sunday 7:30 am
  • Saturday 11:30 pm â Sunday 7:30 am
