Environmental Health Safety Specialist

About the role

Under the general direction of the EH&S Environmental Services Manager, this position manages the Certified Unified Program Agency (CUPA) compliance program and supports the hazardous materials and hazardous waste programs. Serves as a subject matter expert in the CUPA and asbestos/lead program. The Specialist will participate in the department daily and after-hours "on-call" team to provide technical information and response to the campus community.

Responsibilities

• Conduct and coordinate audits, investigations, evaluations, and achieve necessary corrective action in a timely manner.
• Interpret Federal and State Regulations found in 10CFR, 49CFR, 40CFR, 8CCR, 17CCR, 22CCR, 24CCR, 26CCR, 13CCR, the California Vehicle Code, Hazardous Waste Operations policies/procedures, and the campus NRC Radioactive Materials License.
• Perform forklift operation, drive a manual transmission truck, and use a drum dolly and a variety of pumps for transferring liquids.
• Develop detailed compliance reports, environmental assessment reports, and correspondence.
• Interpret new regulations, determine their applicability to campus operations, and devise strategies and procedures for compliance.
• Convey technical information in lay terms, interpret and advise on regulations and laws, conduct training and educational programs.
• Perform calculations for radioactive decay, package limits, disposal limits, toxicity of mixtures, and drum contents.
• Participate in the department daily and after-hours "on-call" team to provide technical response to the campus community.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in chemistry, environmental health, occupational health, environmental toxicology, biological sciences, public health, or similar discipline. Different academic backgrounds with relevant work experience will also be considered.
• Current 40-hour HAZWOPER Training Certificate.
• Valid CA commercial driver's license with HazMat endorsement or able to obtain commercial license with HazMat endorsement within 6 months.
• Valid California driver's license, driving record in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enrollment in the California Employer Pull Notice Program.
• Demonstrated technical writing skills.
• Communication (oral, written, presentation, documentation) and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) credential or have the experience and education to obtain the CHMM within 6 months.
• Two to five years of relevant industrial hygiene experience with a focus on asbestos and lead industry (assessments, sampling, oversight, abatement, reporting, etc.), hazard assessments, and exposure sampling.
• Skills to perform calculations for radioactive decay, package limits, disposal limits, toxicity of mixtures, and drum contents.

Pay

Salary range: $80,951.76 - $146,890.80 annually.

• 100% fixed, on-site

Special Requirements

• Employment is contingent upon successful completion and maintenance of certification of the Department of Transportation (DOT) Drug and Alcohol Testing program; employee will be placed on the random testing pool list for drug and alcohol testing.
• Must be willing to work in BioSafety Level (BSL) 1 or 2 facility where non-human primates may be either naturally or experimentally infected with potentially hazardous diseases such as HIV, SIV, or Herpes B virus.
• No facial hair that would interfere with wearing respiratory protection.
• This is a critical position; employment is contingent upon clearing a criminal background check(s) and may include drug screening, medical evaluation clearance, and functional capacity assessment.
• This position has direct access to or responsibility for controlled substances, high-risk hazardous chemicals, biological or radioactive/nuclear materials.
• Must obtain Commercial Driver's License with Hazardous Materials Endorsement within three months from date of hire and maintain throughout employment.
• Position will participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice System.
• Employee is personally responsible for following health and safety guidelines/instructions.
