Environmental Health & Safety Specialist

About the role

The EHS Specialist supports environmental, health, and safety at the Sumitomo Biorational, Osage facility and provides monthly support to the MGK Chaska facility. They ensure compliance with state, local, and federal regulations, as well as company Responsible Care policies.

Responsibilities

• Supports the EHS Manager and Osage Site Leadership Team to achieve EHS vision and goals
• Serves as a point of contact for all employees to understand and support EHS daily activities
• Executes and tracks completion of site EHS compliance calendar activities
• Supports the development and delivery of training programs
• Solicits feedback from others to better understand and improve EHS initiatives
• Aids in incident and near miss investigations to determine root cause and implement countermeasures
• Proactively identifies and communicates compliance risks to the organization
• Communicates and teaches regulatory and technical knowledge to operations staff
• Performs compliance sampling and monitoring, data gathering, inspections, and audits
• Assists with new hire orientation outlining safety rules and regulations
• Supports department safety teams and ergonomic improvement teams
• Conducts Job Hazard Analysis, Risk Factor Index determinations, SPOT observations, as needed
• Supports manufacturing safe work permits, lock out/tag out, and other activities
• Conducts building and grounds surveys to detect code violations, hazards, and incorrect work practices and procedures
• Performs other duties as assigned
• Travel

Qualifications

• A minimum of 3 years of Environmental, Health & Safety experience in an industrial or manufacturing setting
• Strong knowledge of OSHA and EPA compliance and recordkeeping
• Strong communication skills in group presentations, individual interactions, and written documentation
• Ability to work independently, be self-starter, and as part of the team
• Demonstrated ability to use standard office software programs, including spreadsheets, word processing, and project management
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university (Major in Engineering, Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, or related field)
• OSHA 30 hour Certification
• Certification as CSP and / or CHMM is a plus
