Environmental Health Safety Specialist

About the Role

The EHS Specialist is primarily responsible for verifying that the firm complies with its health and safety plan; preparing site-specific health and safety plans, conducting regular site visits to confirm that the plan is being implemented, and making recommendations to management on plan improvements as field conditions change. The EHS Specialist facilitates safety and environmental reviews and works with management and staff to improve company programs and policies.

Responsibilities

• Lead and facilitate safety program activities by training and developing all team members and helping to create and sustain a robust safety culture.
• Guide and promote safe work performance through development, implementation, and enforcement of safety management systems, programs, policies, and procedures in accordance with OSHA requirements.
• Conduct on-site safety and environmental reviews to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and work with site personnel to improve programs.
• Perform accident/incident investigations and plan corrective action.
• Organize, maintain, and ensure all environmental and safety compliance records are organized and maintained in accordance with corporate specifications and regulatory requirements.
• Develop and oversee activities involving Environmental, Health, Safety, and Industrial Hygiene procedures, programs, permits, licenses, and approvals.
• Provide safety and health technical support to project teams.
• Maintain a visible field presence on assigned projects.
• Participate with the project team in safety-related planning and problem-solving.
• Participate in and lead, where appropriate, site monthly safety committee meetings as required.
• Identify, anticipate, and take action to address Environmental, Health, and Safety concerns, hazards, exposures, and unsafe practices.
• Perform any other duties per the direction of the EHS Manager/Director.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree or higher, preferably in a safety-related field.
• A minimum of 5 years in the construction industry applying Environmental, Health, and Safety programs and systems in accordance with OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations.
• Valid Driver’s License with good driving record.
• OSHA 30-hour Construction Safety training required.
• OSHA 500 certification, or the ability to become certified.
• First Aid/CPR training.
• Supervisory experience.
• Knowledge of state, federal, or local laws related to the position.
• Competence in Microsoft Office applications.

• Ability to work independently as well as in a team.
• Ability to travel to different job sites as needed (travel 10-50%).

Physical Demands

• May at times be required to lift items weighing no more than 50 pounds.
• While performing job duties, may be required to sit, stand, or walk around for extended periods of time.
• Will be required to wear common Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as steel-toe boots, safety vest, hard hat, etc.

Work Environment

Work will involve exposure to all weather conditions such as hot, humid, rainy, and/or snowy winter, combined with regular work time indoors in environmentally controlled conditions. Will regularly work in an outdoor construction project environment.
