About the Role

We partner with the world's leading AI research labs to build smarter, more technically accurate AI models. Now, we're looking for environmental engineers to bring their domain expertise to the frontier of AI development.

Your knowledge of water treatment, air quality, and hazardous waste isn't just valuable in the field — it's exactly what's needed to make AI systems more reliable, rigorous, and safe. You'll challenge advanced language models with expert-level problems, expose their blind spots, and help shape how the next generation of AI reasons about environmental science and engineering.

This is a fully remote, flexible contract role — work on your own schedule, 10 to 40 hours per week.

What You'll Do

  • Design Expert-Level Problems — Develop complex, multi-step environmental engineering challenges spanning contaminant transport, mass balance in treatment plants, hydrology, Life Cycle Assessments (LCA), and more
  • Author Gold-Standard Solutions — Write rigorous, step-by-step technical solutions — including chemical dosage calculations, hydraulic flow models, and pollutant dispersion simulations — that set the benchmark for correct AI responses
  • Audit AI Outputs — Critically evaluate AI-generated remediation plans, environmental impact statements, and technical calculations for accuracy, safety, and compliance with standards like EPA regulations and ISO 14001
  • Sharpen AI Reasoning — Identify logical errors in AI thinking — such as incorrect stoichiometry in biological treatment processes or failure to account for secondary environmental impacts — and provide structured feedback that directly improves model performance

Who You Are

  • Advanced Degree — Masters (pursuing or completed) or PhD in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering with an environmental focus, or a closely related discipline
  • Domain Expertise — Strong foundation in one or more areas: aquatic chemistry, wastewater process design, air quality engineering, or hazardous waste remediation
  • Analytical Writer — Able to communicate complex ecological and engineering concepts clearly and precisely in written form
  • Detail-Oriented — High precision when checking unit conversions, chemical equations, and regulatory compliance logic
  • No prior AI experience required — if you know your field, we'll handle the rest
  • Nice to Have — Prior experience with data annotation, data quality, or evaluation workflows
  • Familiarity with environmental modeling software (e.g., AERMOD, SWMM, EPA tools)

Why Join Us

  • Work on cutting-edge AI projects with top research labs and AI teams
  • Fully remote and asynchronous — work when and where it suits you
  • Freelance flexibility with meaningful, intellectually engaging work
  • Contribute to AI systems that will be used across environmental, scientific, and engineering contexts worldwide
  • Potential for ongoing work and contract extension based on performance

Pay

Compensation is commensurate with experience.
