We’re looking for an Environmental Engineer who is passionate about protecting public health through safe and reliable drinking water. Whether you're early in your career or bringing years of experience, you’ll join a collaborative team of engineers and scientists reviewing and providing input on public drinking water projects from planning through permitting. You’ll work closely with internal programs—Operations, Compliance, Capacity Development, and Water Resources—to help communities implement sustainable, resilient drinking water projects in compliance with the Water Supply Rule.
About the role
- Apply your engineering skills to protect public health and the environment.
- Develop a keen eye for detail when reviewing projects involving water sources, storage, transmission, distribution, pumping, and treatment systems.
- Thrive in a multidisciplinary environment, discussing hydraulics, treatment chemistry, funding, public health, and environmental justice.
- Collaborate clearly with both internal teams and external partners.
- Provide patient, supportive technical and regulatory assistance to water systems and their consultants.
- Take initiative and care deeply about making a difference.
Requirements
- A foundation in drinking water planning, treatment, and distribution, whether from coursework, internships, or professional experience.
- The ability, or developing ability, to critically review engineering drawings, specifications, and reports with attention to detail.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with sound judgment and professional tact.
- Interest in professional growth; we actively support pursuit of engineering licensure, training, and collaborative opportunities.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in environmental, sanitary, chemical, water resources, civil, or mechanical engineering.
- OR Associate’s degree or higher in engineering, with at least two (2) years of experience in an environmental engineering field.
Benefits
The State’s total compensation package features an outstanding set of employee benefits that are worth about 30% of your total compensation, including:
- 80% State-paid medical premium and a dental plan at no cost for employees and their families.
- Work/Life balance: 11 paid holidays each year and a generous leave plan.
- State Paid Family and Medical Leave Insurance (FMLI).
- Two ways to save for your retirement: A State defined benefit pension plan and a deferred compensation 457(b) plan.
- Tuition Reimbursement.
- Flexible spending healthcare and childcare reimbursement accounts.
- Low-cost group life insurance.
- Incentive-based Wellness Program.
- Qualified Employer for Public Service Student Loan Forgiveness Program.
Schedule
- Hybrid work model.
- Field site visits during sanitary surveys.
- Flexible scheduling and a strong commitment to work-life balance.
- Overtime is rarely required and always compensated.
Environmental Factors
- Duties are largely performed in an office setting; some field travel may be necessary for which private means of transportation must be available.
- Fieldwork may involve exposure to chemicals, gases, hazardous liquid and solid waste, and construction sites during all weather conditions; and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water.
- Some work outside of regular working hours, including attendance at public meetings, may be required.
- Strong differences of opinion may be encountered on a regular basis.
This is a limited-service position through September 2027. Recent graduates, EITs, and early-career engineers are encouraged to apply.
