Entry- Level Field Technician (Dayton)

About the Role

As a Distribution Field Inspection Technician, you’ll play a key role in maintaining the safety, reliability, and accuracy of electrical distribution systems. Based in the Dayton area, you’ll travel to field locations to collect data, inspect utility assets, and support infrastructure planning and maintenance efforts.

Responsibilities

• Conduct visual inspections of overhead and underground electrical distribution equipment.
• Collect, record, and analyze field data to support utility operations and planning.
• Map and document Low Voltage Distribution (LVD) systems.
• Identify and inventory utility equipment located on poles and throughout the distribution network.
• Prepare minor work orders and inspection reports based on field findings.
• Perform asset audits and inventories to maintain accurate utility records.
• Support joint-use and permitting activities through field documentation.
• Complete pad-mounted equipment inspections and pole analysis activities.
• Assist with metering, apparatus services, and lighting audits.
• Utilize laptops, tablets, GPS devices, and field software to capture and update information in real time.
• Measure clearances and equipment locations using specialized tools such as height sticks and range finders.
• Follow established safety standards, utility procedures, and field protocols.
• Collaborate with teammates and office staff to deliver accurate, high-quality project results.

Requirements

• Strong attention to detail and a commitment to accurate documentation.
• Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Excel and data entry applications.
• Ability to learn technical concepts and utility industry standards.
• Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions.
• Reliable attendance and a strong work ethic.
• Good communication and teamwork skills.
• Ability to walk routes, carry light equipment, and perform field inspections.
• Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
• High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent (preferred).

Preferred Experience

While not required, the following experience is a plus:

• Utility locating or utility field work.
• Power distribution systems.
• Overhead or underground electric infrastructure.
• Pole inspections or pole analysis.
• GPS mapping and data collection.
• Safety-focused work environments.
• Associate degree in a technical field.
• Interest in developing utility, electrical, or infrastructure-related skills.

Work Environment

This position is based out of a Dayton-area office, where you’ll start each day by receiving assignments and coordinating field activities. Most project locations are within approximately one hour of the office. You’ll spend the majority of your time outdoors conducting inspections, collecting data, and documenting utility assets. The role offers an excellent balance of field work and technology utilization while being less physically demanding than traditional construction or labor-intensive positions.

Schedule

Four 10-hour shifts per week, offering extended weekends.

Pay

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr. Individual compensation offered within this range will depend on qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
