About the role

This is an entry-level driver training role. The Driver Trainee learns to drive a tractor-trailer or straight truck on intrastate and/or interstate routes—local, over-the-road (OTR), shuttle, or overnight—to deliver and unload food and food-related products to customers. All routes must be completed safely in accordance with Company policies and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. The role involves professional interaction with customers, vendors, and coworkers, and may include additional duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Attend and successfully complete PFG Entry Level Driver Trainee or Dock to Driver Training Program; complete all required training documentation.
  • Ride with and assist driver trainer in executing deliveries as directed.
  • Perform pre- and post-trip safety checks and inspections of tractor/truck and trailer per DOT regulations and company safety standards; report any safety issues or required repairs.
  • Follow all DOT regulations and company safe-driving guidelines; immediately report safety hazards.
  • Inspect trailer for properly loaded and secured freight; perform count checks and verify customer invoices.
  • Complete all required paperwork accurately and legibly.
  • Move tractor to loading dock and attach preloaded trailer as needed.
  • Drive to and deliver customer orders according to predetermined route schedules.
  • Unload products from trailer and transport items into designated customer storage areas; perform damage control checks and scan items per company policy.
  • Verify delivery of items with customer and obtain proper signatures; collect payment (cash or checks) where required.
  • Load customer returns onto trailer and secure trailer doors; ensure tractor, trailer, and freight are locked/secured at all times.
  • Unload damaged goods and customer returns at driver check-in and complete necessary paperwork.
  • Unload equipment and materials; remove trash from trailers as required.
  • Complete daily record of hours of service and log in accordance with federal, state, and company requirements.
  • Perform general housekeeping duties in tractor, loading dock area, and trailers; secure all equipment and complete end-of-shift paperwork.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED or equivalent.
  • Internal PFG candidates: 1 year of service in good standing as outlined in the PFG Entry Level Driver Trainee or Dock to Driver Training Program; must be able to attain CDL Permit and DOT Health Card.
  • External Driver School Direct Hire: 0–6 months experience with a CDL Permit.
  • External Entry Level Hire: 0–6 months with a CDL Permit.
  • Valid CDL A Permit.
  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Meet all state licensing and/or certification requirements (where applicable).
  • Clean Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) for the past 3 years.
  • Pass post-offer drug test and road test.
  • Attain or hold a valid current DOT Health Card.
  • Able to hand-lift and use equipment (e.g., two-wheeler, lift gate) to move and stack product cases/freight of varying size and weight (typically 60–90 pounds) throughout shift.
