Enterprise Network Design Engineer - Remote

About the role

This role supports and enhances a large-scale network environment spanning approximately 1,400 locations across North America. We're seeking a technically strong engineer with hands-on experience in Cisco, SD-WAN, and Meraki technologies who can troubleshoot complex issues, contribute to network design initiatives, and help deliver reliable, secure, and scalable network solutions across the enterprise. This role is approved to be fully remote and can be based anywhere in the United States.

Responsibilities

• Collaboratively design and manage all WAN/LAN, WLAN, VPN, and network infrastructure.
• Work in tandem with other engineers, architects, the Network Operations Center (NOC), Security Operations Center (SOC), incident responders, technology infrastructure, and development team members.
• Troubleshoot all network infrastructure issues proactively.
• Research, analyze, and recommend new technologies to meet changing business needs.
• Improve infrastructure uptime, performance, and reliability.
• Establish and implement standards and policies for all network infrastructure.
• Optimize network performance for scalability, reliability, and usability.
• Develop and maintain documentation related to design and changes in network infrastructure.
• Configure, troubleshoot, and scale load balancing platforms, with a focus on F5-based environments.
• Design network configuration settings for internal and external systems, including modification of DHCP, VPN, SD-WAN, and VLANs.
• Modify both core and edge routers and switch configurations as needed.
• Support the team on escalated major incidents and follow through to resolution.
• Coordinate installation, repair, or maintenance of network hardware equipment.
• Partner with IT Service Delivery, NOC, and Operations Managers to maintain hardware and software inventory for compliance and asset management.
• Accurately document all new system implementations and modifications to existing systems (moves, adds, changes).
• Own Disaster Recovery planning, development, and implementation for network infrastructure.
• Ensure compliance with IT Security and Governance processes, such as Change Control, SOX, and PCI.
• Identify and implement technical and service improvements.
• Ensure technology documents/certificates (e.g., product registrations, licensing, activations, SSL certificates, maintenance agreements, service contracts) are evaluated, updated, and processed.
• Ensure networks and associated software applications are operational; ensure hardware and software are patched and/or updated; ensure all data circuits are operational in accordance with vendor specifications.
• Maintain knowledge of network technologies and evaluate new technologies to gain business efficiency.
• Perform other duties or functions as requested by management.

Requirements

• 3+ years of experience in Data Center, SDWAN, Cloud, Wireless, Load-Balancer, Routing, Firewall, and Monitoring technologies.
• Highly technical and analytical expertise, with a proven deep background (preferred 5+ years’ IT experience) in technology design, implementation, and delivery.
• Associate’s degree in Computer Science, Information Assurance, MIS, or related field, or equivalent experience.
• Experience supporting large-scale enterprise network environments.
• Experience contributing to network design, implementation, and optimization initiatives.
• Hands-on experience with Cisco routing and switching, Meraki, SD-WAN, VPN, and wireless technologies.
• Ability to independently troubleshoot and resolve complex network issues.
• Experience documenting network designs, configurations, and operational procedures.
• Experience in network engineering, including large-scale design, datacenter (hosted and cloud), and local LAN technologies.
• Self-motivated, proactive, creative, and efficient in identifying issues and proposing solutions.
• Solid understanding of network protocols.
• Experience with Cisco and Palo Alto firewalls.
• Track record of acting with integrity, taking pride in work, seeking to excel, being curious and adaptable, and communicating effectively.
• Excellent written, oral, instructional, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
• Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, etc.).
• Ability to improve and adapt work methods based on past experiences, even without defined procedures, and identify solutions through interpretive skills and analyses.
• Knowledge of applicable wireless security and privacy practices and compliance with SOX and PCI.
• Technical certifications preferred: CCIE (Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert), CCNP (Cisco Certified Network Professional), or CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional).
• Project coordination skills and ability to organize, prioritize, and document work with minimal direction to deliver within critical dates.
• Ability to lead, mentor, and empower individuals and team members.
• Ability to travel up to 5% as needed.
• Ability to establish operational plans and implement strategic goals.
• Develop and implement new processes and procedures.
• Requires independent completion of work where judgment and discretion are necessary.
• Solve complex problems without defined procedures, requiring innovation and ability to assess multi-functional impacts.
• Recognized problem solver with highly proficient communication skills and ability to effectively present to senior and executive leadership.

Pay

Actual pay rate may vary depending upon location. The estimated pay range for this position is $5,444.76 - $9,537.00 monthly for salaried roles. This role is bonus or incentive plan eligible. Ferguson complies with all wage regulations, and the starting wage may be higher in certain locations based on local or state wage requirements.
