About the Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Enterprise Architect to support a mission-critical Department of the Air Force C3BM/ABMS program. This lead engineering role applies advanced engineering and network principles to solve complex problems and supports the development, evaluation, and implementation of secure WAN/transport solutions. Embedded within the mission team, you will translate operational and cybersecurity requirements into recommendations and implementable work packages for field deployment across classified and unclassified environments.
Responsibilities
- WAN Architecture & Design Engineering:
- Provide WAN/transport design recommendations for mission networks, including site connectivity, segmentation, resiliency, and performance engineering across classified and unclassified enclaves.
- Provide engineering requirements, interface definitions, and implementable WAN designs, including L0 circuit configurations and CLLI circuit route options.
- Recommend optimized WAN transport designs using OTN, ITU-T standards, MPLS/IP, Ethernet, VPN/IPsec, SDWAN, and secure access patterns (SASE/SSE).
- Propose WAN work package options for engineering trades before design and implementation.
- Deliverables include HLD/LLD, diagrams, IP plans, routing/QoS policies, security boundary requirements, BOMs, configuration templates, and interface cut sheets.
- Assist in developing Methods of Procedure (MOPs), implementation plans, cutover schedules, rollback procedures, and test/validation plans.
- Recommend optimized WAN solutions for current and long-range planning; collaborate on tool and technology selection.
- Assist in creating and maintaining network engineering and compliance evidence for audits and RMF/ATO activities.
- Identify opportunities to accelerate network capability delivery, starting with the INDOPACOM Area of Responsibility (AoR).
- Support operational projects, maintenance windows, turn-ups, migrations, and service transitions.
- Recommend automation and standardization of repeatable engineering tasks.
- Troubleshoot complex issues, document resolutions, and update package templates and standards.
- Assist with WAN capacity planning and L0 circuit delivery/integration/activation.
- Provide design review inputs and update network drawings and route maps.
- Support ROM estimates and cost models for new sites, routes, and WAN services.
- Operational Support, Provider Coordination, and Documentation:
- Act as a technical liaison between teams (government, integrators, OEMs, and telecommunication providers) for design alignment and field execution.
- Provide Tier 3/4 troubleshooting and root cause analysis for complex WAN/transport issues.
- Support RMF/ATO activities by producing required network engineering evidence.
- Deliver technical design reviews, implementation readiness briefings, and mission impact assessments.
Qualifications
- IAT Level I/II/III Certification.
- Bachelors (BA/BS) and 14-17+ years of related experience; Master's and 13+ years; PhD or JD and 10+ years.
- 14+ years of progressive experience in WAN/transport engineering, network architecture, or telecommunications, including designing and delivering deployable implementation packages.
- Deep expertise in:
- Optical Network (OTN) and ITU-T standards (G.709, G.798, G.872)
- MPLS/IP, Ethernet, VPN/IPsec overlays, and enterprise/carrier WAN design patterns
- Advanced routing (BGP, OSPF/ISIS), traffic engineering, and convergence considerations
- SDWAN and secure connectivity patterns (SASE/SSE), including segmentation, QoS, and performance engineering
- Network security technologies, boundary protections, and Zero Trust networking principles
- Demonstrated ability to create field-ready engineering packages, including diagrams, IP plans, BOMs, configuration templates, and implementation steps.
- Experience supporting task order execution, design reviews, and resolving design-to-field discrepancies.
- Excellent technical writing and communication skills, including briefing technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Consultative skills: establish rapport, fact-find, define requirements, present solutions, and maintain customer-focused behavior in dynamic environments.
