About the role

The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) at SUNY Maritime College is currently searching for two part-time tutors to work the nightly study halls during a mandatory five-week summer program for pre-freshman from July 6th to August 7th.

Responsibilities

  • Attend all study halls (12 hours per week) for EOP students from July 6, 2026 to August 5, 2026, 6:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday evenings
  • Provide personal, academic and motivational support for students
  • Act as role models throughout the entire summer program
  • Monitor students to ensure they remain focused on their schoolwork
  • Submit weekly reports to monitor what students are working on and what subjects they are struggling with that week
  • Inform EOP of any concerns regarding a student by email, call or text on that same day

Requirements

  • Associate's degree or higher
  • Demonstrable academic writing skills
  • Familiarity with MLA reference style of writing
  • Must demonstrate sufficient skills to perform the duties of the assigned tasks
  • Strong grasp of the standards of critical reading and writing in an academic setting
  • Basic understanding of the collaborative one-on-one approach to tutoring writing
  • Inter-personal qualities conducive to one-on-one and small group interactions with students of various backgrounds
  • Strong written and oral communication skills

Preferred qualifications include an Associate's degree or higher in Math, English and/or related field, and experience teaching or tutoring.

Pay

The anticipated hourly rate for the position is $40.00 - $50.00 per hour.

Schedule

The position will require working 12 hours per week, Monday through Thursday evenings, from July 6, 2026 to August 5, 2026, 6:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m.
