This position is open for external candidates only and will be filled at either the Engineering Technologist 3 or Engineering Technologist 4 level, depending on the selected candidate's skills. Additional responsibilities will apply if hired at the Engineering Technologist 4 level.

About the Role

The Plutonium Infrastructure Engineering Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory develops, maintains, and applies diverse engineering capabilities to provide innovative solutions in support of the Laboratory's Plutonium Facility. This position supports the PIE Install Engineering Group, responsible for implementing the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program on Division projects. The program includes processes, standards, training, and qualifications applicable throughout a facility's life cycle to manage risks and meet customer requirements safely, securely, cost-effectively, and in an environmentally responsible manner.

The Engineering Technologist ensures technical aspects of construction and maintenance projects conform to Approved Project Documents by monitoring activities, providing input during scoping, design, execution, and closeout, and verifying baseline documents, design adherence, and as-built configurations. Field Engineers expedite project execution by identifying issues, coordinating technical solutions, and guiding constructors through approved procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Independently perform advanced field engineering assignments, evaluate field conditions, and resolve technical and constructability issues.
  • Verify compliance with approved project documents and coordinate solutions between design engineering and construction.
  • At the Engineering Technologist 4 level:
    • Serve as a senior technical resource with substantial independence and latitude.
    • Lead complex, multidisciplinary field and engineering activities.
    • Resolve unique or unusually complex technical issues and determine appropriate technical approaches.
    • Provide technical direction, review others' work, and mentor less-experienced personnel.
    • Develop or improve methods and approaches for successful construction project execution.

Requirements

  • Advanced knowledge of construction engineering principles, practices, and methods.
  • Experience reading, interpreting, and evaluating engineering design documents, drawings, specifications, and technical documents for completeness, adequacy, and constructability.
  • Experience interpreting construction industry specifications, means and methods, and applicable national codes and standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate engineering and technical solutions effectively, both verbally and in writing, with management, customers, engineering, construction, and craft personnel.
  • Experience conducting field verifications of construction work to ensure compliance with approved drawings, specifications, codes, standards, and project requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaboratively identify and resolve facility and infrastructure engineering issues while coordinating between design engineering and construction.
  • Experience coordinating technical resolution of field conditions, design discrepancies, constructability issues, and other construction-related matters.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage assigned field engineering activities and prioritize multiple assignments of varying complexity.

Additional Requirements for Engineering Technologist 4

  • Expert-level knowledge of construction engineering principles, practices, and work control methods to provide senior-level technical support for complex facility and infrastructure construction.
  • Demonstrated experience independently planning and leading complex field engineering assignments, including establishing technical priorities and determining appropriate methods with minimal direction.
  • Advanced experience leading the resolution of significant, unique, or complex engineering and construction issues requiring in-depth evaluation of technical requirements, field conditions, constructability, and operational constraints.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment and develop technically defensible solutions when conventional approaches are insufficient.
  • Experience evaluating conflicting design requirements, competing technical considerations, and complex field conditions to determine and coordinate resolutions.
  • Demonstrated experience leading technical coordination across engineering disciplines and organizational interfaces for complex construction activities.
  • Advanced experience providing technical direction, consultation, and review of work performed by Field Engineers, Construction Engineers, Engineering Technologists, and project personnel.
  • Experience mentoring and developing less-experienced technical personnel in field engineering, construction oversight, technical problem-solving, and engineering requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage multiple complex assignments or projects while maintaining technical quality, compliance, schedule commitments, and organizational priorities.
  • Experience developing or implementing techniques, methods, approaches, or process improvements to address complex construction engineering challenges and improve project execution.

Qualifications

Engineering Technologist 3: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Science, Math, or a related field from an accredited institution and 8 years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. This position may be subject to DOE Order 426.2 for personnel in DOE nuclear facilities.

Engineering Technologist 4: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Science, Math, or a related field from an accredited institution and 12 years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. This position may be subject to DOE Order 426.2A for personnel in DOE nuclear facilities.

Skills

  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience supporting design and/or construction activities for nuclear, accelerator, laboratory, industrial, or other complex/high-hazard facilities.
  • Experience working at Department of Energy (DOE) or National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) facilities, programs, or projects.
  • Knowledge of DOE requirements, LANL Engineering Standards, and Conduct of Engineering requirements.
  • Experience reviewing engineering submittals, requests for information (RFIs), field change documentation, nonconformances, and other construction-related technical documents.
  • Experience with construction work planning, control processes, and facility maintenance, modification, or installation activities.
  • Experience reviewing material purchase requisitions, material takeoffs, estimated quantities, and material compliance with engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Experience supporting procurement-related engineering activities, including preparation or review of equipment/material specifications, technical bid evaluations, and award recommendations.
  • Experience with design, installation, modification, maintenance, commissioning, and/or turnover of facility and infrastructure systems.
  • Experience supporting project controls activities, including cost estimates, quantity takeoffs, forecasts, change orders, and evaluation of technical impacts to project cost and schedule.
  • Experience supporting configuration verification, system acceptance, project turnover, and construction closeout activities.
  • Experience using engineering and construction software, technology, and tools applicable to facility and infrastructure project execution.

Pay

  • Engineering Technologist 3: $106,400 - $176,000
  • Engineering Technologist 4: $117,200 - $195,400

Schedule

This position may require 24/7 coverage, including shift or weekend work. Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of management.

Regular appointment employees must serve a 1-year commitment in their current position to be eligible for other Laboratory jobs unless approved by their Division Leader.

Work Location: Onsite in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Additional Details

This position requires a Q clearance, which necessitates U.S. citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Selected applicants will undergo a background investigation. Due to federal restrictions, citizens of the People's Republic of China (including Hong Kong and Macau), the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea), and the Russian Federation who are not Lawful Permanent Residents are prohibited from accessing facilities supporting national security laboratories and nuclear weapons production facilities, including Los Alamos National Laboratory.
