Engineering Technician IV

Location: Huntsville, AL (NASA Marshall Space Flight Center - Redstone Arsenal). U.S. Citizenship and Public Trust clearance required.

About the Role

Astrion is seeking a highly skilled Engineering Technician IV to support the Marshall Engineering Technicians and Trades Support (METTS) III contract at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). This role provides a wide range of technical and trade support, including professional and management oversight of technical staff.

Work environments include laboratories, test stands, machine/manufacturing/fabrication areas, and potentially confined spaces. Noise levels may be high, and physical demands include occasional bending, stooping, or lifting, with or without reasonable accommodation. All positions are contingent upon successful completion of NASA medical screenings at the start of employment and annually thereafter.

Responsibilities

• Develop or review designs by extracting and analyzing engineering data, applying conventional practices to create schematics, designs, specifications, electrical drawings, and parts lists (e.g., circuit diagrams, hardware fittings, piping systems, or site layouts).
• Conduct tests or experiments requiring selection, adaptation, or modification of critical test equipment and procedures. Operate equipment, record data, measure and resolve complex problems, analyze results, and prepare test reports.
• Apply established methods to segments of research and development projects, construct prototype models, conduct tests, redesign as needed, and document findings.
• Compile and process engineering data from field notes, manuals, or lab reports, identify errors or inconsistencies, and determine methods of presentation.
• Assist in design modifications by compiling data on specifications, materials, and operational failures, recognizing inconsistencies, and seeking clarification.
• Operate in specialized, high-risk environments, including cryogenics, high-pressure systems, hypergols, explosives, toxic materials, and confined spaces. Requires specialized training, certifications, and experience.
• Work with safety-critical equipment, large/complex facilities, test stands, and one-of-a-kind test articles, ensuring proper handling, transportation, and operation.

Qualifications

• Experience reading blueprints and understanding parts lists.
• Experience assisting in determining test requirements, equipment modification, and test procedures.
• Experience preparing design drawings and assisting with machinery or equipment design, evaluation, or modification.
• Experience in a machine shop or manufacturing environment.
• Strong communication skills.

Desired Skills

• Experience providing semi-professional technical support for engineers in research, design, development, testing, or manufacturing process improvement.
• Advanced experience in a machine shop or manufacturing environment.

Specialized Operational Environments

• Cryogenics: Liquid Hydrogen, Liquid Oxygen, Liquid Nitrogen, Liquid Helium, and their gaseous forms.
