ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN (ELECTRICAL).

About the Role

You will provide advanced technical support for urgent mission-degrading issues affecting major shipboard systems, including diagnosing and resolving complex problems beyond the capability of forces afloat, intermediate maintenance activities (IMA), or repair activities.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical assistance on urgent mission-degrading CASREPs or similar problems affecting major systems.
• Diagnose and correct technical problems beyond the capability of forces afloat, IMAs, or repair activities.
• Inspect and perform functional checkout/demonstration of major systems on new construction ships or major conversions.
• Lead organized teams of technical experts and maintenance personnel in functional testing and inspection of major shipboard systems.
• Provide technical support to Naval organizations during repair and test/grooming functions to supplement shipyard/SUPSHIPS staffing.
• Analyze and study specific major deficiencies in operations, maintenance, or logistics support of assigned systems to develop or evaluate improvements in design, maintenance procedures, or material.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. Citizen.
• Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
• Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.

• Current federal employees applying for GS jobs must serve at least one year at the next lower grade level (time-in-grade requirement).

• This is a bargaining unit position.
• Must successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
• Must obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty.
• Must wear personal protective equipment (e.g., helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators, safety shoes) continuously during work shifts.
• Position may require travel to CONUS and OCONUS locations, including remote or isolated sites, via military or commercial aircraft for extended periods.
• Requires considerable walking, climbing, and crawling in and around systems/equipment with marginal accessibility.
• Requires standing for extended periods on hard steel decks during ship visits.
• Shift hours may change without three days' advance notice and for periods of less than three weeks.
• Exposure to high noise levels is required.

Qualifications

For the GS-12 grade level, your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience includes:

• Providing advanced technical assistance and troubleshooting for urgent mission-degrading, complex, atypical, or mission-critical equipment causalities (CASREPs) or similar problems affecting major systems.
• Resolving electrical, electronic, and mechanical shipboard problems beyond the capability of organizational maintenance levels.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills.
