Engineering Technician
About the role
Summary Engineering Technicians may plan, assign, direct, and review the work of Engineering Technicians and Aides/Traffic Engineering Aides and/or train staff in work procedures. They also check parcel and subdivision maps for compliance with codes, policies and procedures; calculate and collect various permit fees; prepare preliminary and final plans for specific design and facility replacement projects; perform complex drafting and mapping assignments; reduce survey field notes; prepare quantity take-offs and materials lists; assist in laying out new striping, markings, and traffic signs; research property descriptions, including easements and rights of way; maintain annexation and related real property books, files and maps throughout the City; inspect permit work including utility, paving and sidewalk, curb, and gutter work; inspect subdivisions to ensure that infrastructure is installed according to City specifications; answer questions and confer with contractors, engineers, developers, representatives of other government agencies and the public regarding questions, complaints and/or requests for service in assigned areas of expertise; use a computer and/or electronic calculator to solve a variety of engineering-related problems; maintain accurate records, prepare correspondence and various technical, statistical or narrative reports; may use a personal or on-line computer in the work; prepare and maintain master files of drawings and specifications; research and update as required; inspect capital improvement projects to ensure that they are installed in accordance with plans and specifications; perform materials tests for construction projects; perform field surveying operations, setting up, cleaning, adjusting operating and maintaining survey instruments.
Responsibilities
- Checks parcel and subdivision maps for compliance with codes, policies and procedures
- Calculates and collects various permit fees
- Prepares preliminary and final plans for specific design and facility replacement projects
- Performs complex drafting and mapping assignments using manual or computer-aided methods
- Reduces survey field notes, prepares quantity take-offs and materials lists as required
- Produces technical support to traffic engineering staff by conducting field and office studies, setting traffic counters and varied electronic equipment and analyzing collected data
- Assists in laying out new striping, markings, and traffic signs
- May research property descriptions, including easements and rights of way; maintains annexation and related real property books, files and maps throughout the City
- Inspects permit work including utility, paving and sidewalk, curb, and gutter work; inspects subdivisions to ensure that infrastructure is installed according to City specifications
- Answers questions and confers with contractors, engineers, developers, representatives of other government agencies and the public regarding questions, complaints and/or requests for service in assigned areas of expertise

Requirements
- Engineering Technician I: Possession of an Associate of Arts degree or completion of sixty semester units or equivalent quarter hours in an accredited college or university in a pre-engineering, or closely related, curriculum
- Engineering technical support work at a level similar to the City's Engineering Aide class may be substituted for the education on a year-for-year basis
Qualifications
- Knowledge of: Basic supervisory principles and practices; Principles, practices and terminology of varied engineering technical support work including drafting, mapping, traffic control, field inspection, and materials testing; Common public works construction methods and materials; Engineering mathematics through trigonometry; Computer user applications related to the application of engineering mathematics and drafting problems; Standard office practices and procedures; Data collection and analyses methods
- Skill in: Planning, assigning and reviewing the work of others; Training others in work procedures; Performing engineering technical support work in a variety of areas; Using drafting tools and equipment and preparing skilled layouts, maps, and graphic materials; Setting up, operating, cleaning, adjusting and maintaining a variety of survey instruments; Analyzing engineering technical and statistical information, evaluating alternatives and making sound recommendations; Making accurate records and notes and preparing clear and concise reports, correspondence and other written materials; Making accurate field inspections and material testing; Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work; Encouraging safety practices on various construction projects.
