About the role

With minimal direction from a department manager, this position oversees and manages the engineering design of large electrical transmission and distribution capital projects that require considerable resources and a high level of functional integration. The role is responsible for all aspects of the project design, including initiation, planning, execution, control, and closeout. This position is available at multiple levels; applicants will be considered for the level that best matches their education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the planning and design of multiple large-scale capital projects (e.g., modifications/additions to facilities and infrastructure) under minimal supervision.
  • Establish, track, and control scope, schedule, and risk to deliver assigned projects within approved scope, budget, and schedule.
  • Plan, schedule, and execute all phases of projects in accordance with project management processes, policies, guidelines, and corporate governance.
  • Develop detailed project plans, ensuring project scopes, team responsibilities, milestone dates, and procurement strategy are clearly stated.
  • Develop project schedules in accordance with project objectives and coordinate the development of conceptual and detailed designs.
  • Interface with external customers throughout the project life cycle and establish responsibility for managing physical construction.
  • Provide project progress reports to management and stakeholders in accordance with an approved communication plan.
  • Coordinate with procurement to solicit external materials and services required for project deliverables.
  • Manage the bid process and contracts for external engineering services, negotiating with vendors and contractors regarding work scope changes.
  • Ensure all contract commitments are completed on time per the scope of work and technical specifications.
  • Interface with senior management to gain necessary approvals and manage risk in accordance with corporate governance.
  • Coordinate the tracking, expediting, and completion of material and equipment orders.
  • Facilitate interdepartmental communication for the project team and deliver on internal and external stakeholders’ expectations.
  • Provide coaching to less experienced project managers, engineers, and other project team members to assist in their career development.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Related professional experience (minimum years vary by level).
  • Experience or formal education in project cost, schedule, scope controls, forecasting, and reporting.
  • Ability to analyze information, form conclusions, and provide meaningful solutions.
  • Proficient with technical applications, software, and tools.
  • Ability to motivate and influence others, including skills and experience in team building.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Requirements by Level

  • Eng/Ops Proj Mgr II: A minimum of two years of directly related professional experience.
  • Eng/Ops Proj Mgr III: Three or more years of directly related professional experience, including:
    • Experience in project scheduling, cost controls, tracking, and reporting methodologies.
    • Knowledge of financial principles to quantify costs and benefits and track project budgets.
    • Experience in the application of Project Management Institute (PMI) project management techniques or equivalent.
    • Experience managing vendors and contractors regarding work scope changes.
  • Sr. Eng/Ops Proj Mgr: Five years of related professional experience. Project Management Professional (PMP) certification by PMI must be maintained or gained during the first year in this position.
  • Principal Eng/Ops Proj Mgr: Ten years of related professional experience and the ability to analyze information, form conclusions, and provide meaningful and creative solutions to non-typical business issues.

Preferences

  • Five years of related professional experience.
  • Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) credential from the Project Management Institute.
  • Experience as an engineer or other technical project support role.
  • Understanding of environmental regulations (e.g., National Environmental Protection Act, environmental impact statements, environmental assessments, State Historical Preservation Office, Army Corp of Engineers).
  • Working knowledge of SAP for cost tracking and forecasting.
  • Working knowledge of Primavera scheduling or other project management software.
  • Experience in electric utility design and/or construction.
  • Knowledge of the company’s business, policies, procedures, and practices.

Pay

Hiring range: $77,200–$185,350. This position is eligible for an annual discretionary performance incentive bonus of up to 12.00% of salary.
