About the role
The Engineering Manager oversees all site engineering and maintenance activities, including safety, quality, continuous process improvement, and capital-project execution. This high-hazard facility is both OSHA Process Safety Managed and classified under AkzoNobel’s framework. The role is based in Reading, PA.
Responsibilities
- Champion the Process Safety Management Program as Site Responsible Engineer, ensuring compliance with OSHA and AkzoNobel standards.
- Drive continuous process improvements and lean manufacturing initiatives.
- Own the €2 million annual Capital Investments Plan, prioritizing projects with stakeholders and coordinating implementation across HSE&S, Quality, and Production.
- Develop and maintain Engineering and Maintenance policies and procedures to ensure a trained, safe, and efficient workforce.
- Select, train, develop, and motivate all maintenance and engineering personnel.
Maintenance Responsibilities
- Maximize asset utilization and maintenance to enhance shareholder value.
- Analyze equipment reliability and implement action plans to reduce failures.
- Negotiate contracts, pricing, and terms with subcontractors and suppliers to optimize their activities.
- Ensure compliance with all HSE&S procedures and regulations.
- Foster excellent teamwork and communication within the team.
Site Management Team Duties
- Participate on the ALPS-CI Site Steering Committee and lead specific Continuous Improvement Programs.
- Uphold HSE&S responsibilities and training requirements as outlined in Reading Site BMS 4.3.11.
- Manage health, safety, environmental, and security responsibilities, including contractor management, asset integrity, process and equipment design, operation, and maintenance.
- Engage in the Safety Journey, intervening to stop unsafe work and adhering to the Golden Principle.
- Promote adherence to health, safety, and environmental regulations at corporate, federal, state, and local levels.
Requirements
- BS in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical preferred).
- 7+ years of engineering experience, with DCS (especially ABB) platform experience preferred.
- Experience in a chemistry, coatings, or resin plant, with familiarity implementing OSHA PSM.
- Proven track record in leading Hazard Study reviews, Pre-Startup Safety Reviews, and Management of Change.
- Demonstrated process improvements using structured methodologies (A3, root cause, PDCA, Lean, Six Sigma). Green/Black Belt certifications preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Power BI, and SharePoint.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of engaging all levels of the supply chain.
- Direct people management experience preferred.
- Exceptional technical writing skills for Capital Requests and training documents.
