Role

The Seller Growth Engineering team is responsible for helping new sellers succeed on Whatnot—from their seller application, to their very first livestream, to building thriving businesses. Within Seller Growth, the Seller Lifecycle Growth/Enterprise team is building the systems that give every seller the knowledge, guidance, and confidence they need to activate, grow, and scale. As the Engineering Manager for Seller Lifecycle Growth/Enterprise, you'll lead the team responsible for building Whatnot's seller onboarding and education platform.

Responsibilities

  • Partner closely with Product, Design, Data Science, and Marketing to create educational experiences that are personalized throughout the seller journey.
  • Define the technical strategy for how Whatnot coaches sellers to be successful.
  • Hire, develop, and grow a high-performing team of engineers across backend, web, and mobile.
  • Partner closely with Product and Design to define the long-term vision for seller education and the technical investments needed to support it.
  • Drive platform investments that enable educational content to be delivered contextually throughout the seller experience rather than existing as standalone documentation.
  • Build and own experimentation, measurement frameworks, and goals around seller education impacting seller activation, engagement, retention, and business growth.
  • Plan and execute ambitious cross-functional projects while coordinating dependencies across Engineering, Marketing, and international product teams.
  • Foster a strong engineering culture centered around ownership, technical excellence, and rapid iteration.

Requirements

  • Experience leading engineering teams, supporting career development while delivering results in a high-growth environment.
  • Low ego, a builder mindset, and sound judgment when making difficult trade-offs with limited resources.
  • Proven ability to recruit, mentor, retain, and develop high-performing engineering teams.
  • Hands-on technical leadership experience building and operating large-scale distributed systems and complex web and mobile applications.
  • Strong product and design instincts, with an understanding of how user experience and technical architecture work together to deliver great products.
  • Comfortable making pragmatic decisions around technical debt and balancing short-term execution with long-term maintainability.
  • Experience defining and leveraging product metrics, with a strong understanding of both the value and limitations of data.
  • Able to effectively manage stakeholders, navigate competing priorities, and operate successfully in ambiguous environments.
  • Significant hands-on engineering experience in the domain you’ll be leading, enabling credibility with technical teams.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
