Engineering Manager, Platform Reliability
We're looking for an Engineering Manager who combines strong technical judgment with people leadership to help build the systems and team practices that keep Asana resilient at scale. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys turning broad reliability problems into clear priorities and can balance foundational engineering work with iterative delivery.
About the role
You'll help shape what Platform Reliability means at Asana while building a team that ships durable systems, strong operational practices, and high-trust partnerships. You will define the reliability roadmap for a rapidly growing global platform, transforming reliability into a core architectural advantage. You'll partner closely with platform engineering, infrastructure, and product teams in Warsaw, Reykjavik, and San Francisco to protect Asana under real-world load, improve how traffic and failure modes are handled, and ensure reliability is designed in rather than added later. This is a role for someone who can lead through influence, coach engineers, and raise the bar for execution and collaboration.
This role is based in our Warsaw office with an office-centric hybrid schedule. The standard in-office days are Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Most team members have the option to work from home on Wednesdays, while Fridays depend on the type of work you do. We offer a Contract of Employment (UoP) for our employees in Poland.
Responsibilities
- Build and lead a new Platform Reliability team, hiring and developing engineers while setting a clear standard for collaboration, ownership, technical excellence, and growth.
- Partner with technical leaders to define the roadmap for core reliability systems such as load shedding, rate limiting, circuit breakers, traffic controls, and other platform guardrails.
- Establish and evangelize best-in-class operating practices for incident response, postmortems, and proactive risk management through SLOs and capacity planning.
- Work across platform and infrastructure teams to embed reliability into architecture, planning, and delivery from the start of new initiatives.
- Lead end-to-end projects from scoping and design through rollout, making thoughtful tradeoffs between speed, safety, and long-term maintainability.
- Build a culture of strong engineering execution through coaching, feedback, code reviews, and technical mentorship.
- Use incidents, metrics, and customer impact to continuously refine priorities and make the team more effective over time.
Requirements
- Demonstrates curiosity about AI tools and emerging technologies, with a willingness to learn and leverage them to enhance productivity, collaboration, or decision-making.
- Strong software engineering background and can contribute meaningfully to technical discussions, design tradeoffs, and execution even as a people leader.
- 5+ years of engineering management experience, ideally with backend, infrastructure, or reliability-focused teams.
- Familiarity with building and operating services in the cloud (e.g., AWS) and/or using cloud-native systems (e.g., Kubernetes).
- Experience in building and operating production systems at scale, with deep care for failure modes, resilience, and graceful degradation.
- Comfort working with distributed systems concepts such as backpressure, capacity planning, traffic management, and explicit reliability targets.
- Preference for long-term solutions over quick fixes and automation over manual labor.
- Excellent coaching and communication skills, helping engineers grow, creating clarity in ambiguous situations, and strengthening collaboration across teams.
- Ability to partner with product, infrastructure, and engineering leadership to make tradeoffs and drive decisions.
Benefits
- Generous, transparent, and fair compensation system (base salary and RSUs).
- Contract of Employment (with the option of 50% tax-deductible costs for author's rights usage in applicable roles).
- Health insurance with dental and travel coverage (Lux Med).
- Breakfast and lunch catering on in-office days.
- Vacation allowance.
- Career growth budget.
- Home office setup budget.
- Gym/Fitness card.
- Fertility healthcare and family-forming support with Carrot.
- Mental health support via Modern Health.
