Engineering Manager

About the role

Courier Health is a New York City‑based technology company on a mission to improve the patient experience for hundreds of millions of people living with a chronic condition or rare disease. We build the fastest‑growing patient experience solution for the life sciences industry, helping biopharma companies support patients from diagnosis through therapy initiation and adherence. As part of our growth we are adding three Engineering Managers to lead teams that own parts of our platform such as AI intake agents, core data, integrations, patient services, field access, or workflows. You will report to a Director of Engineering, partner with a dedicated Product Manager, and lead a team of 4‑7 engineers. This is a management role; you will be judged by what your team delivers and how much your engineers improve. You’ll be technical enough to review designs, unblock engineers, and work incidents, and experienced enough that people‑management challenges are familiar to you.

Responsibilities

• Run your team’s operating rhythm: sprint planning, estimation, demos, and retrospectives.
• Identify at‑risk commitments early and communicate them proactively.
• Work within the product development process using reviewed PRDs and technical designs.
• Hire for your own team, from sourcing to close.
• Give direct, specific feedback, conduct performance reviews against the engineering career ladder, promote earned performers, and address performance gaps early and fairly.
• Own the reliability of what your team ships: testing, observability, on‑call, and incident response.
• Partner closely with Product: share the roadmap, bring engineering view of scope, sequencing, and cost, push back when roadmap exceeds capacity, and make trade‑offs explicit.
• Lead your team’s adoption of AI coding tools so that speed and quality rise together, and measure the impact.

Requirements

• 2+ years as an engineering manager in your current or most recent role, leading 4‑7 direct reports.
• 10+ years of overall software engineering experience.
• Based in New York and able to work from our Nomad office 4+ days per week.

Qualifications

• Senior engineer background with continued technical credibility: you review designs and code, unblock engineers, and join incidents.
• Proven people‑management experience: hired onto your own team, delivered hard feedback, managed underperformers, and promoted individuals.
• Experience establishing team rituals (planning, estimation, retrospectives, on‑call) rather than just inheriting them.
• Track record of shipping end‑to‑end with a Product partner and able to cite outcomes you moved with metrics (cycle time, incident rate, delivery predictability).
• Habit of discussing failures in terms of what you’d do differently, not who was at fault.
• Experience leading teams on production cloud systems.
• Familiarity with our stack: TypeScript/Node, React, GraphQL, AWS (largely Serverless), and PostgreSQL.

Skills

• Experience in healthcare or another regulated environment handling PHI (HIPAA, SOC 2) – a plus.
• Experience leading a team through rapid growth at an early‑stage company – a plus.
• Experience shipping LLM‑powered or agentic features to production, or leading a team’s move to agentic coding tools – a plus.
• Experience working on enterprise B2B products with heavy data integration (APIs, SFTP, HL7, FHIR, EDI) – a plus.
