Engineering Inspector I & II ($1,000 Sign-On Incentive)

About the Role

Performs skilled technical inspections of assigned projects for the Public Works Division under field conditions. This role ensures compliance with approved plans, specifications, codes, and other applicable regulations in the civil engineering and construction field. Work is performed with some independence under general supervision.

Responsibilities

• Performs inspections of roadway maintenance services or construction activities and materials to ensure full compliance with approved plans and specifications.
• Determines quantities for materials used and amount of work completed.
• Ensures public safety and traffic management at construction sites.
• Maintains daily diary/log of project activities.
• Receives and responds to public inquiries and complaints.
• Interprets approved plans, specifications, and County regulations and applies them during field inspections.
• Receives, reviews, prepares, and/or submits various records and reports, including engineering drawings, photographs, contracts, technical reports, invoices, billing statements, change order requests, project diaries, memos, and correspondence.
• Attends administrative meetings, pre-bids, pre-construction meetings, and project walk-throughs, as assigned.
• Performs data entry of completed inspections in the county database.
• Participates in emergency operations, including preparation, response, and recovery due to adverse weather events, as assigned.

Additional Duties (Construction Section)

• Performs field inspections of assigned projects to ensure compliance with contract documents, approved design plans, and applicable regulations.
• Maintains daily logs, project records, and prepares inspector reports, including photo documentation.
• Makes field changes as needed that do not alter the scope and cost of construction.
• Accurately measures and calculates quantities of work performed to sign invoices certifying contracted work was completed satisfactorily.
• Attends and conducts project pre-construction meetings, walk-throughs, and prepares punch lists of deficiencies.
• Investigates citizen complaints on assigned construction projects to achieve resolution.

Requirements

Engineering Inspector I: Graduation from high school or equivalent and two (2) years of engineering experience in roadway construction or maintenance supervision or maintenance inspection; or an equivalent combination of related education, training, or experience. Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license.

Engineering Inspector II: Graduation from high school or equivalent and four (4) years of engineering experience in roadway construction or maintenance supervision or maintenance inspection; or an equivalent combination of education, training, or experience. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License and obtain a Florida Driver's License by date of hire. Depending on area of assignment, must have satisfactorily completed the Contractor's Underground Utility Examination for inspectors or must complete within six months of entry into the position. Must have the ability to communicate with the general public while discussing, explaining, and interpreting standards and codes.

Preferences

• Knowledge of FDOT standards, specifications, and regulations.
• Experience with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and database management.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Understanding of technical specifications and requirements.
• Ability to produce daily and weekly status and project reports.
• Ability to measure roads for resurfacing, areas for mowing, etc., and accurately calculate quantities for performance of projects.

Pay

Engineering Inspector I: Pay Grade: 013 - From $21.51 to $27.96 per hour (Non-Exempt).

Engineering Inspector II: Pay Grade: 014 - From $23.19 to $30.14 per hour (Non-Exempt).

Placement based on education and experience. This position may be eligible for a sign-on incentive.
