About the role

Reporting directly to the Engineering Project Lead, the Designer – Engineering performs design work under the supervision of a Sr. Designer, Design Lead, and/or Project Lead. You will produce accurate manufacturing and customer drawings, Bills of Material, and related design components using MicroStation, SolidWorks, NX (CAD/CAM), and SAP (ERP), adhering to company design standards, industry specifications, and customer requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Safety: Abide by all customer and Nortrak safety policies and procedures. Ensure design specifications meet safety standards.
  • Quality:
    • Produce practical designs, Bills of Material (BOMs), Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), and other design components for tooling and Nortrak products.
    • Work with high accuracy, applying knowledge of manufacturing, service requirements, customer standards, and industry best practices.
    • Stay current with company manufacturing processes, product knowledge, and industry standards.
    • Be aware of design standards and assigned customer specifications.
    • Collaborate with Manufacturing to address design and manufacturability issues.
    • Assist in creating Customer Requests for Information (RFIs) to clarify project details.
    • Assist in creating customer submittals for projects.
    • Update and revise drawings and BOMs as needed.
    • Self-check work for accuracy before submission for official review.
  • On-Time Delivery:
    • Maximize time utilization to complete projects accurately and meet department and company deadlines.
    • Create project pre-orders and track long lead-time items to meet delivery dates.
    • Understand and meet assigned task due dates.
    • Contribute to project milestones.
    • Work within well-established practices and clearly defined scope.
  • Cost:
    • Work as a team member to produce designs efficiently, on budget, and with high manufacturability.
    • Understand and manage budgeted hours for assigned tasks.
  • People:
    • Share information and encourage collaboration among team members.
    • Develop strong working relationships with internal and external customers and suppliers.
    • Assist production with technical questions, support, guidance, and problem-solving.
    • Work closely with senior staff on projects of minimal complexity under close supervision.
  • Environmental: Adhere to Nortrak’s Environmental Procedures, Practices, and Policies.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in an appropriate Engineering discipline.
  • Three to five years of experience in the engineering field.
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment is an asset.
  • Knowledge of materials and casting processes related to Nortrak’s manufactured products.
  • Familiarity with Finite Element Analysis (NX Simcenter) preferred.
  • Detailed knowledge of CAD software, preferably NX and MicroStation.
  • SAP knowledge is an asset.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work as a project team member and prioritize multiple tasks efficiently.

Skills

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Familiarity with Siemens Teamcenter is an asset.

Physical Demands

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer; occasional standing and walking during scheduled shifts.
  • Must remain stationary for extended periods and move throughout the building to access files.
  • Ability to work effectively in a noisy environment.
  • Ability to lift and move equipment or objects up to 20-25 pounds occasionally.
  • Visual requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Frequent use of hands and arms for dialing phones and using a computer mouse.
