Engineering Consultant - HVAC Systems (Hybrid)
Our client, a local distribution company providing natural gas service to approximately two million people in Oregon and Southwest Washington, is seeking a skilled and motivated Engineering Consultant with expertise in HVAC Systems for their Portland, Oregon location.
About the role
As an Engineering Consultant, you will play a key role in building professional relationships and representing company interests on codes and standards boards, advisory councils, energy-related agencies, and industry associations. You will drive sensible energy efficiency standards to help the region achieve its goals while ensuring stakeholder interests. Your work will include collaborating on the evaluation, analysis, and strategic advancement of pre-commercial and early-adoption natural gas technologies, as well as driving research, technical analysis, deployment planning, and market adoption of innovative equipment and solutions.
You will advise developers, builders, architects, and engineering peers on bringing gas service to both existing and new projects, with a strong focus on supporting the inclusion of natural gas in multifamily developments. This hybrid position is a direct hire role, and relocation assistance is available for qualified out-of-territory candidates.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with developers, architects, and engineers to assist in bringing natural gas to their projects.
- Prepare for and participate in various codes and standards development activities.
- Engage with internal company stakeholders, including senior executives, to inform them about technical, equipment, and building science topics.
- Gather data and perform analysis regarding energy use and building performance to inform strategic planning.
- Monitor emerging technical and engineering trends.
- Develop knowledge of the natural gas industry and the organization while advancing your professional skills.
- Work with peers both locally and nationally to share information about challenges, solutions, and successes.
Requirements
- Engineering degree required; Mechanical Engineering degree preferred.
- 3+ years of experience in HVAC systems for residential, commercial, and/or multi-family projects. Additional experience on complex projects or with building codes and standards is highly preferred.
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) designation or the ability to obtain it within 2 years of hire is required.
- Knowledge of the utility industry preferred.
- Aptitude and experience overseeing multiple projects/functions while balancing priorities, resources, and deadlines.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a genuine interest in contributing to technical solutions.
- Professional written and verbal communication skills for presenting to technical audiences and senior-level management.
- Analytical skills necessary to review technical information, particularly regarding building mechanicals.
- Understanding of market trends in both the natural gas equipment and equivalent electric equipment industries.
- Valid Oregon/Washington Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record. Must obtain a valid Oregon/Washington driver’s license within 90 days if currently licensed in another state.
