Engineer Senior Principal II – Systems - RADAR - $15K Sign On Bonus (Part-Time)
About the role
BAE Systems Space & Mission Systems (SMS) is seeking a visionary Technical Leader to spearhead the ground-up development of a next-generation RADAR system. This is a high-impact role designed for a multidisciplinary expert who possesses a deep mastery of RADAR Digital Signal Processing (DSP), algorithms, and hardware, and who is ready to transition from technical execution to strategic leadership. As the Technical Lead, you will own the technical roadmap and lead an Integrated Product Team (IPT) across multiple domains—including mechanical, electrical, software, firmware, and test engineering—to push the boundaries of what is possible in multi-domain environments. You will provide the technical and programmatic bridge between high-level customer requirements and the delivery of cutting-edge hardware and software products.
Responsibilities
- Technical Leadership & Architecture:
- Lead and synchronize IPTs across RADAR, mechanical, electrical, software, firmware, and test engineering, serving as the primary authority on interactions between these domains.
- Drive and own complex trade studies to determine optimal system architectures, ensuring data-driven design decisions aligned with mission utility.
- Develop metrics and frameworks to evaluate emerging concepts and translate them into discriminating technologies for the customer.
- Modernize and evolve the sector's technical processes and tools to increase engineering velocity and precision.
- Programmatic & Strategic Oversight:
- Partner directly with customers to define and refine Concept of Operations (CONOPS), ensuring the final product exceeds operational expectations.
- Provide rigorous technical and contractual oversight of subcontract partners, monitoring performance to ensure seamless integration into the broader system.
- Manage scope, schedule, and technical risk to ensure the program meets all mission-critical milestones.
- Lead management reviews and provide critical life-cycle event reporting through portfolio leadership chains.
- Mentorship & Organizational Growth:
- Mentor and coach senior and mid-level systems engineers in mission systems engineering and architecture development.
- Represent the organization in high-level presentations to peers, executive management, and external stakeholders.
- Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units, and the Company.
- Perform other duties as necessary.
Requirements
- BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field plus 10 or more years related experience. Each higher-level degree (Master's or Ph.D.) may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from an accredited institution recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
- A current, active Secret security clearance is required with the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret/SCI.
Qualifications
- Technical Mastery:
- Deep technical proficiency in the design, implementation, and optimization of complex RADAR systems.
- Demonstrated mastery of the full systems engineering lifecycle, including: development of CONOPS; requirement derivation, allocation, and management; rigorous Verification and Validation (V&V) and change management.
- Proven experience leading all phases of hardware program execution, from initial planning and design reviews through manufacturing, assembly, integration, testing, and final operational sell-off.
- Strategic Leadership & Influence:
- Extensive knowledge of mission sets and core technology areas with a proven track record of maintaining established relationships with key personnel within the customer community.
- Ability to define and refine internal processes and procedures to align with customer needs, including development and delivery of training to ensure team alignment with standard operating procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to foster a culture of high-performance collaboration across internal teams, external partners, and customer organizations.
- Exceptional presentation and communication skills, with documented experience delivering technical briefings and strategic recommendations to senior decision-makers and technical audiences.
Preferred qualifications
- Master's or PhD in Physics, Systems Engineering, or a related STEM field.
