Engineer IV, V - Facilities Development Branch
About the role
Positions that serve as technical experts in a specialized area or program function perform staff advisory, consulting and reviewing duties and direct and work with a staff of specialists as assigned in long-range planning, research and/or development of specific projects, programs and functions.
Responsibilities
- Initial review of projects received, planning methods of approach and making work assignments to employees supervised for most effective use of abilities and time;
- Keeping informed on latest developments in the area of specialization and advising employees supervised of current data;
- Solving engineering problems referred for help, advising on appropriate methods and techniques to be used and applicability of precedents, but recognizing when problems should be referred to other engineers or higher authority;
- Ensuring coordination of the work with related projects both within and outside the section;
- Reviewing technical reports, project data and completed work submitted by subordinates for technical accuracy, adequacy, validity of conclusions, conformance to policies and regulations, consistency of test results and feasibility of recommendations made;
- Recommending priority and duration of assigned work;
- Preparing budget estimates for major and long-range projects;
- Performing personnel management functions such as selecting employees and evaluating performance, taking disciplinary action as required, and training new employees in the methods and techniques to be followed in accomplishing assignments;
- Initiating and preparing technical reports and correspondence.
Requirements
- Basic Education/Experience Requirements: Graduation from a school of engineering in an accredited college or university, or a combination of college training in engineering and experience involving the application and knowledge of the fundamental physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering including physics, chemistry, mathematics through integral calculus and engineering sciences such as statics, dynamics, strength of material, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and engineering drawing and other specialized courses to one of the branches of engineering.
- Experience Requirements: At least 3 years of progressively responsible professional engineering experience, with at least one year of experience comparable to the next lower level. For the Engineer V level, supervisory potential rather than actual supervisory experience may be accepted.
Qualifications
- A Master's degree in a pertinent engineering field from a school of engineering in an accredited college or university may be substituted for one year of Engineering Experience.
- Excess Supervisory, Staff Advisory or Administrative Experience of the type and quality described above may be substituted for Engineering Experience on a year-for-year basis.
Skills
- Knowledge of the properties of materials and other appropriate engineering and scientific knowledge and skills;
- Ability to interpret systems operational requirements in terms of physical facilities and the design and development of standard procedures for efficient operational use or maintenance of such facilities;
- Ability to evaluate, investigate or survey engineering projects, structures, devices or services;
- Ability to develop and design machines, equipment, structures or power, water, communication or transportation systems and facilities or the preparation of development, design or construction specifications for such materials or systems, involving the use of theoretical and applied mechanics.

Salary: The advertised salary is based on full-time employment and includes shortage and school year differentials, if applicable.
Pay
- Engineer IV, EN-24: $8,715.00 - $11,123.00 per month
- Engineer V, EN-26: $9,411.00 - $12,013.00 per month
