Engineer IV and V

Hiring rates will be based on availability of funds, the applicant's qualifications, and other relevant factors.

Pay

• Engineer IV: $8,299 to $9,504 per month (EN 24, Step D to I)
• Engineer V: $8,963 to $10,265 per month (EN-26, Step D to I)

About the Role

The Engineer IV performs difficult and complex professional engineering work in the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and/or operation of specialized engineering projects. They may also plan and conduct research, development, or other work in a specialized engineering field to improve, extend, or validate precedents, data, methods, or techniques.

The Engineer V supervises the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and/or operation of major and complex engineering projects. They may also work independently on advanced planning, design, or research projects involving elements of a highly critical or unprecedented nature. Engineers at this level perform work characterized by varied and complex features, often requiring intensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices. They may serve as specialists in a technical field or provide technical guidance on critical problems.

Responsibilities

• Perform professional engineering work in planning, design, construction, maintenance, and/or operation of engineering projects.
• Conduct research, development, or specialized engineering work to improve or validate engineering precedents, data, methods, or techniques.
• For Engineer V: Supervise major and complex engineering projects.
• For Engineer V: Work independently on advanced planning, design, or research projects of a highly critical or unprecedented nature.
• Apply intensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignment and related fields.
• Provide technical guidance on critical or highly specialized engineering problems.
• Review work prepared by other professional engineers or contract architect-engineer firms (Engineer V).

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident alien, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.
• Must possess a valid State of Hawaii Professional Engineer license at the time of application.
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited four-year college or university. Applicants graduating within three months may apply with verification of expected graduation.
• Engineering experience:
  • Engineer IV: Three years of progressively responsible professional engineering experience, with at least one year comparable to the next lower level.
  • Engineer V: Four years of progressively responsible professional engineering experience, with at least one year comparable to the next lower level.
• For Engineer V: Must possess supervisory aptitude.
• Some positions may require a valid driver’s license.
• Some positions may require the ability to lift and carry items of various weights, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Security Clearances

• For positions requiring unescorted access to secured areas at the airport:
  • Must undergo a pre-employment fingerprint-based federal criminal history records check (SIDA clearance).
  • Must not have been convicted of a disqualifying criminal offense within the past ten years.
  • Cost for the records check is the applicant’s responsibility.
• For positions requiring unescorted access to secured areas at the harbor:
  • Must undergo a pre-employment fingerprint-based federal criminal history records check (TWIC clearance).
  • Must not have been convicted of a disqualifying criminal offense within the past seven years.
  • Cost for the records check is the applicant’s responsibility but will be reimbursed upon hire.
