About the Role

The Engineer IV performs difficult and complex professional engineering work in the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and/or operation of specialized engineering projects. They may also plan and conduct research, development, or other work in a specialized engineering field to improve, extend, or validate precedents, data, methods, or techniques.

The Engineer V supervises the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and/or operation of major and complex engineering projects. They may also work independently on advanced planning, design, or research projects involving elements of a highly critical or unprecedented nature. Engineers at this level perform work characterized by varied and complex features, often requiring intensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignment and related fields. They may provide technical guidance on critical problems or projects of a highly specialized nature and supervise other professional engineers or contract firms.

Responsibilities

• Perform professional engineering work in planning, design, construction, maintenance, and/or operation of engineering projects.
• Conduct research, development, or specialized engineering work to improve or validate precedents, data, methods, or techniques.
• Supervise major and complex engineering projects (Engineer V).
• Work independently on advanced planning, design, or research projects of a highly critical or unprecedented nature (Engineer V).
• Provide technical guidance on critical or highly specialized engineering problems (Engineer V).
• Review work prepared by other professional engineers or contract architect-engineer firms (Engineer V).

Requirements

• Valid State of Hawaii Professional Engineer license at the time of application.
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited four-year college or university (or graduation within three months of application).
• Three years of progressively responsible professional engineering experience for Engineer IV; four years for Engineer V, with at least one year comparable to the next lower level.
• Supervisory aptitude experience for Engineer V.
• U.S. citizenship, nationality, permanent residency, or eligibility for unrestricted employment in the U.S.
• Some positions may require a valid driver’s license.
• Some positions may require the ability to lift and carry items of various weights, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Security Clearances

• Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) Clearance: Required for positions involving unescorted access to secured areas at the airport. Applicants must undergo a fingerprint-based federal criminal history records check and must not have disqualifying convictions within the past ten years. The cost is the applicant’s responsibility.
• Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) Clearance: Required for positions involving unescorted access to secured areas at the harbor. Applicants must undergo a fingerprint-based federal criminal history records check and must not have disqualifying convictions within the past seven years. The cost is the applicant’s responsibility but may be reimbursed upon hire.

Pay

• Engineer IV: $8,299 to $9,504 per month (EN 24, Step D to I).
• Engineer V: $8,963 to $10,265 per month (EN-26, Step D to I).
