Responsibilities
- Independently explore new abstract problem spaces, technologies, and processes relevant to Mortenson’s engineering and construction operations.
- Identify opportunities where innovation can improve safety, quality, cost, schedule, constructability, or scalability.
- Develop proof-of-concepts, prototypes, workflows, or analytical models to validate ideas before broader adoption.
- Maintain awareness of industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices, and evaluate their applicability to Mortenson projects.
- Apply broad, cross-disciplinary engineering knowledge (electrical, civil, structural, SCADA, automation, software, data, or construction processes) to evaluate and integrate solutions.
- Collaborate with discipline-specific engineers to ensure innovations align with engineering quality expectations, design coordination, and constructability.
- Support or contribute to design reviews, technical evaluations, and implementation planning where innovation intersects with engineered systems.
- Responsible for getting innovations across the finish line.
- Ensure all innovation efforts align with Mortenson legal and ethical guardrails.
- Translate external industry ideas into Mortenson-ready solutions, accounting for risk, scalability, and operational fit.
- Work effectively with internal stakeholders across Engineering Services, Operations, Innovation, and project teams.
- Communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Influence adoption of new ideas through data, testing, and practical demonstration rather than authority.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of engineering principles, business standards, practices, procedures, and product / program requirements.
- Working knowledge of the engineering, construction, or industrial project delivery industry.
- Experience evaluating or implementing new technologies, tools, processes, or workflows.
- Ability to quickly learn unfamiliar technical domains and synthesize information from multiple disciplines.
- Active listening skills and effective communication including an openness to diverse input and feedback.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Microsoft Excel experience to track and analyze different components and combinations.
- Familiarity with Mortenson, its engineering practices, standards, and culture (preferred).
- Engineer II: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline, 2+ years of experience in a similar role.
- Engineer III: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline, 4+ years of experience in a similar role.
Pay
The base pay range for this role is $84,100 – $133,300. (Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL – 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR – 10%, Washington, D.C. – 12.5%). Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience, with consideration given to internal equity.
