This position will be hired at either a level II or III level based on experience.

About the role

The Engineer II position is the intermediate level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with general supervision, develop advanced skills, and work with greater independence. The Engineer III position is the advanced level, solving complex problems with limited supervision and applying fundamental concepts to progressively complex and varied work.

This position supports modeling activities within Distribution SCADA and Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) applications that enable real-time monitoring, analysis, and control of the electric distribution grid for Distribution Control Center operations. The role requires an understanding of electric distribution systems and the ability to develop and maintain scripts and programs (e.g., Python, PowerShell, PERL, C#) that interact with various data sources. Responsibilities include creating, maintaining, validating, and testing data models in various formats, as well as graphical UI content for Distribution Control Center operators. The role involves troubleshooting and resolving data and application issues, contributing to continuous improvement of model data quality in DCC systems.

Responsibilities

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of well-defined problems in SCADA and ADMS modeling, data integration, and application functionality supporting Distribution Control Center operations.
  • Contributes to team decision-making, planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring work activities with changing priorities.
  • Prepares technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches related to modeling logic, scripting solutions, data structures, and system configurations.
  • Conducts engineering studies and completes routine projects with minimal oversight, including development, testing, and maintenance of scripts and tools interacting with SQL databases and structured files (e.g., XML).
  • Demonstrates proficiency in technical competencies, including electric distribution network fundamentals, grid devices, and their representation within SCADA and ADMS systems.
  • Develops positive working relationships, maintains accurate records, and collaborates with modeling, operations, IT, and engineering teams.
  • Supports company goals, ensuring reliability and operational effectiveness of Distribution Control Center Systems through accurate modeling, automation, and continuous improvement.
  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals through effective planning and organizing; decisions may impact work group operations or department results.

Requirements

Engineer II

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program, or a master’s degree in Engineering in lieu of a bachelor’s.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of engineering experience.

Engineer III

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program, or a master’s degree in Engineering in lieu of a bachelor’s.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of engineering experience.

Qualifications

  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE) or passing grade on the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam.
  • Experience in the utility industry.
  • Experience creating scripts using programming languages and tools (Python, PowerShell, PERL, C#, etc.).
  • Experience working with relational databases (MySQL, Microsoft SQL, PostgreSQL, etc.).
  • Experience with graphical design tools to create UI content (single-line displays, data tabulars, etc.).
  • Experience in an operational environment with emphasis on problem isolation and resolution.
  • Knowledge of Distribution Control Center and Grid Management processes.
  • Knowledge of DMS/SCADA/OMS systems and their data models.
  • Understanding of electrical distribution substation and field device operations.
  • Proficiency in engineering theories, principles, and project management.
  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills.

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. Employees should live within a reasonable commute to the designated Duke Energy facility.
  • Travel Requirements: 5-15%.
