About the role

The Senior Engineer manages work in engineering areas of specialization with minimal supervision, developing advanced skills and the ability to work independently. This position assists in providing technical guidance to Grid Management in the DCC, supports communications across internal departments and external customers, and is responsible for developing and implementing business plans, budgets, and training initiatives regarding DCC and ADMS initiatives. Areas of expertise include Distribution engineering, ADMS, and Switching and Tagging.

This role solves complex problems, demonstrates a broad perspective to identify innovative solutions, and plans priorities for self and team members within the organization’s operating policies. Responsibilities include analysis of complex plans, designs, construction, and maintenance of structures, facilities, systems, and components with voltage levels typically 34.5KV and below.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a technical resource in all aspects of the Company’s distribution operations, focusing on distribution engineering and system operations.
• Monitor the operation of the ADMS to ensure effective, safe operation of ADMS and associated DA equipment, self-healing technology, and volt/var management to meet service voltage levels and power factor goals.
• Plan and determine priorities for self and team members, prescribing processes to achieve objectives within organizational policies.
• Write or oversee the development of switching plans, technical procedures, and guidelines for the operation of the distribution system.
• Demonstrate program and project management discipline through roles over complex projects, including ADMS utilization, seasonal load transfers, and service restoration while adhering to engineering parameters.
• Provide technical support to management, DCC operations personnel, and internal/external customers.
• Provide peer leadership and direction for lower-level engineers across the company and serve on special projects and teams (e.g., IVVC, FISR, Self-Healing).
• Support deployment and operation of distribution automation devices, including line regulators, capacitors, reclosers, and power sensors.
• Provide technical expertise and support for self-healing devices and systems, analyzing feeder/sub data and monitoring alarms to identify trends and develop corrective actions.
• Support Grid Techs in analyzing Volt-Var information and switching activities to ensure power factor targets and proper switching instructions.
• Establish and maintain procedures related to Switching & Tagging (S&T), including maintenance of the S&T Manual.
• Provide technical support for storm response and restoration.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program, or a master’s degree in Engineering in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.
• Minimum of six (6) years of engineering experience, or five (5) years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.

Preferred Qualifications

• Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering degree.
• Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.
• Proficiency in principles of project management.
• Experience in the utility industry.
• Department-specific experience applicable to the hiring department.
• Advancing application of engineering theories and principles.
• Proficiency in researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, and preparing recommendations.
• Good written and oral communication skills.

Schedule

Hybrid – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. Hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to the designated Duke Energy facility. Some business units may require visits to field sites and/or plants.
