About the Role

Collins Aerospace, a leader in technologically advanced, intelligent solutions for the aerospace and defense industry, is seeking a Drafting Designer to join our Mechanical Computer-Aided Design (MCAD) team. In this role, you will work directly with engineering staff to produce 3D models and 2D layout drawings of complex aerospace products, ensuring they meet both engineering and customer requirements. This position is based in Rockford, Illinois, with a hybrid work arrangement.

The selected candidate must be a U.S. citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government-issued Secret security clearance. An active and existing security clearance is required after day one.

Responsibilities

  • Work with engineering for initial 2D concept of product
  • Create 3D product models, outlines, and layouts
  • Develop solid model piece parts and housings in NX, supporting the move toward Model-Based Definition (MBD) and direct-to-manufacture processes
  • Apply tolerance stack-up analysis results to ensure correct fit, alignment, and performance of complex assemblies
  • Create assemblies in NX and manage the Bill of Materials
  • Generate dimensioned detail component drawings for high-complexity piece parts
  • Lead detailing drafters in completing component drawings for design projects
  • Check drawings for accuracy, correct GD&T, and compliance with company and industry standards
  • Support interface with the Structures group to provide necessary physical product definition for stress, thermal, and dynamic analyses
  • Ensure proper filing, control, and export classification of created design data
  • Interface directly with Collins’ engineering teams in the design and development of products
  • Coordinate and communicate with engineering, design, or drafting teams across other Collins divisions worldwide
  • Adhere to established design processes to ensure successful product realization

Travel requirements: Less than 10%

Requirements

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Secret government-issued security clearance (U.S. citizenship required)
  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 2 years of prior relevant experience, or an Advanced Degree in a related field
  • Strong understanding of GD&T and ANSI Y14.5M standards
  • Working proficiency in drafting practices, PLM tools, and general computer applications
  • Proven experience in 3D mechanical design and drafting, including the development of complex assemblies
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a global team
  • Attention to detail and strict adherence to design processes

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of mechanical and manufacturing principles, with demonstrated ability to read and interpret models, assembly drawings, and detailed part prints
  • Proficiency with Siemens NX and Teamcenter, particularly in the design of rotating machines
  • Experience with additional CAD platforms
  • Manufacturing background and experience
  • Familiarity with Model-Based Definition (MBD) and Additive Manufacturing technologies

Pay

The salary range for this role is $68,900 – $131,100 USD. The range provided is a good-faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including role, function, responsibilities, work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
