About the role

D471 Commissioned Ships Propulsion Plant – Mechanical Engineering supports commissioned submarines and training units in the Navy. We provide technical support for various classes of submarines and Naval Nuclear Propulsion Training Sites.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and resolve system and component related questions and problems from Naval Shipyard
  • Perform cost/benefit analysis
  • Perform engineering studies and calculations
  • Resolve obsolescence issues and update provisioning documents
  • Develop ship alterations, maintain fluid system diagrams and construction drawings, and update operating instructions
  • Communicate with NAVSEA, prime contractors, Naval shipyards, and equipment vendors
  • Function as a project engineer overseeing all aspects of engineering tasks including: Overall technical quality, Working in a team environment, Maintaining schedules, awareness of budgets, and interfacing with other engineering and design disciplines

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, Aerospace, or equivalent)
  • 0-5 years of engineering experience post graduation
  • A strong ability to solve technical problems
  • Aptitude for learning and applying technical requirements
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in mechanical, marine, chemical, aerospace engineering, or equivalent
  • Internship, co-op, senior design project, research, or other project experience
  • Involvement in clubs, sports, or other campus activities
  • Engineering experience in a professional setting
  • S. Navy experience in the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program
  • Experience with steam plant design, operations, or testing
