About the role

As an Engine Field Service Trainee, you will assist a Senior Field Service Technician in performing repairs and maintenance on engines and related systems.

Responsibilities

  • Assist a Senior Field Technician in completing assigned jobs and tasks to meet flat rate times and re-do metrics.
  • Complete related paperwork and access databases (work order, parts orders, JSA, DBS, SIMS, SIS web, STW) accurately and timely.
  • Follow contamination control and HAZMAT rules and regulations.
  • Remove and install parts, disassemble and assemble components, and test and adjust assemblies with supervision from a Senior Field Technician.
  • Assist in providing accurate quotes and pricing estimates to customers.
  • Familiarize yourself with correct service report writing, DOT reports, time entry, and expense charges under guidance.
  • Ride along and assist a Senior Field Service Technician with all aspects of daily tasks.
  • Work under the direct mentorship of an assigned Senior Field Service Technician.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; or 1+ years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Associate’s degree/certificate in diesel technology or similar mechanical discipline preferred.
  • Clean driving record and CDL for field assignment; must be at least 21 years old to operate a field vehicle.
  • General knowledge of diesel or gas engines, electrical, electronic, hydraulic, mechanical, and pneumatic systems and components.
  • General knowledge of basic hand tools, air tools, precision measuring tools, diagnostic software, laptops, cranes, and rigging equipment.
  • May require MSHA certification.
  • Successfully complete Work Steps assessment.
  • Flexibility to work various schedules, including shift work, and match the schedule of the assigned Senior Field Service Technician.
  • Willingness to work away from home and stay out of town overnight as required.
  • Ability to work overtime to meet work and deadline requirements.

Skills

  • Pass administered Can Test and Bennett Mechanical Comprehension Test prior to acceptance.
  • Monthly written evaluations will be conducted by the Engine Field Service Supervisor or Field Service Dispatcher.
  • Performance reviews will determine continuation in the program or placement on a 30-day probation period.

This role is considered safety-sensitive. While performing duties, the employee is regularly required to:

  • Stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and talk or hear.
  • Frequently climb or balance.
  • Occasionally sit or smell.
  • Use specific vision abilities including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

The work environment includes exposure to:

  • Moving mechanical parts and toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • Wet and/or humid conditions, high or precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, outside weather conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat.
  • Occasional risk of electrical shock and vibration.
  • Moderate noise levels.

Required travel up to 40%.
