Enforcement and Compliance Full Authority Lateral Officer

About the Role

Under the general supervision of a Sergeant, an Officer focuses on public safety by protecting life, property, and the state transportation infrastructure. The role ensures the safe and efficient movement of commercial traffic through the State of Arizona by enforcing all state and federal laws and regulations relative to commercial vehicle enforcement and regulatory compliance. Officers complete work assignments and training in a timely manner, make arrests when necessary, testify in court, prepare clear and concise written reports, exercise judgment in determining use of force, and promote compliance with all relevant laws and regulations. Background checks and in-state and out-of-state travel are required. The Port of Entry operates 24/7, and Officers are subject to shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

This position is eligible for a $4,000 hiring incentive.

Responsibilities

• Screen commercial driver/vehicle credentials.
• Weigh commercial vehicles and perform enhanced vehicle identity inspections.
• Ensure registration compliance and conduct commercial vehicle safety inspections.
• Conduct traffic stops on commercial vehicles and enforce all pertinent laws, rules, and regulations.
• Issue applicable permits, route over-dimensional loads, and collect appropriate fees and taxes.
• Take enforcement action as authorized by state and federal motor vehicle and operator laws.
• Inspect vehicles, dealer, and salvage yard operations for compliance with State title and registration requirements.
• Prepare clear and concise written reports and testify in court when required.

Requirements

• Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training (AZPOST) Full Authority certification.
• Weapons certified in accordance with AZPOST standards.
• Obtain the CVSA certification within 6 months of hire.
• Valid Driver’s License.
• Individuals with lapsed Arizona peace officer certification or certification from another state may be eligible for Arizona POST certification through Waiver Testing. A Physical Ability Test (PAT) is required for all Waiver Testing.
• As driving is an essential function of the job, employees must possess and retain a current, valid, class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended.
• Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training.
• Employees operating a personally owned vehicle on state business must maintain statutorily required liability insurance (per Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.11).
• All newly hired State employees must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).

Qualifications

• Knowledge of Motor Vehicle Laws, rules, and regulations.
• Computer skills, report writing, and basic money handling experience.
• 1 year of law enforcement experience.
