POSITION SUMMARY

Barton Malow is seeking an experienced Energy Marshal (EM) for a mission-critical construction project in Philadelphia, PA. The EM ensures all energization events are executed safely and in compliance with owner and equipment manufacturer requirements.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as the sole authority for approving all energization and de-energization activities within the construction zone, including final approval prior to all energizations.
  • Organize and lead pre-energization meetings at least five days in advance of major equipment events, identifying all critical steps and safety concerns to inform daily work plans.
  • Assign and train Deputy Energy Marshals (DEMs) as needed to monitor concurrent work activities; the EM remains solely responsible for all DEMs and overall program compliance.
  • Own the Lock Out / Tag Out (LOTO) program for the project — no LOTO work proceeds without EM or DEM review. Confirm existence of and review LOTO plans for all electrical work in the construction space and ensure approved LOTO requirements are incorporated into daily work plans.
  • Confirm all personnel performing work on energized or locked-out equipment hold Qualified Worker status per NFPA 70E, OSHA, or an equivalent recognized standard; maintain records documenting Qualified Worker training.
  • Review single-line drawings and ensure all workers involved in LOTO activities understand the systems they are working on.
  • Oversee Foreign Object and Debris (FOD) inspections prior to entry into any previously energized equipment; manage re-inspection and re-tamper tagging before re-energization.
  • Ensure tamper tags are properly installed and maintained from pre-energization through the PFHO milestone; replace failed tags immediately.
  • Verify removal of all temporary protective grounding and earthing equipment prior to energization.
  • Verify correct position of switches, circuit breakers, transfer switches, test switches, and terminal block disconnects in accordance with the energization plan.
  • Ensure completion of all owner and equipment manufacturer pre-energization and L3 inspections.
  • Coverage of the Operational Zone related to Barton Malow scope, serving as the sole approving authority for energization and de-energization of those circuits.
  • Establish and maintain proper safety barriers to restrict access to electrical equipment during energization and commissioning activities.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Completed NFPA 70E training on Electrical Safety Related Work Practices (required).
  • Strong working knowledge of LOTO procedures, pre-energization processes, and electrical safety standards.
  • Experience reading and interpreting single-line electrical drawings.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead safety-critical coordination across multiple trade partners and stakeholders.
  • Prior experience on large-scale construction projects, data centers, or industrial facilities preferred.
  • Clear, direct communication skills with the ability to lead meetings, issue approvals, and escalate concerns effectively.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage concurrent work activities and competing priorities.
  • A strong sense of urgency with the ability to assess complex issues, resolve conflicts, and drive resolution in a firm yet fair manner.
