Endowed Chair, Section Chief, Pediatric Stem Cell Transplantation and Stem Cell Therapy

Phoenix Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders (CCBD) is seeking a pediatric hematologist/oncologist to serve as Section Chief of Pediatric Stem Cell Transplantation and Cell Therapy in Phoenix, Arizona. The section chief will also hold the Buzz and Janice Ghiz Family Foundation Endowed Chair in Bone Marrow Transplant and Cellular Therapy.

About the role

The incoming chief will lead and further grow one of the largest pediatric bone marrow/stem cell transplant (BMT) and cell therapy programs in the Southwest, leveraging clinical and research opportunities in collaboration with the University of Arizona College of Medicine and Mayo Clinic Arizona.

The pediatric BMT/cell therapy program at Phoenix Children's performs approximately 45-50 transplants annually, including autologous, related and unrelated allogeneic donor transplants, and administers more than minimally manipulated cell therapies such as haploidentical stem cell transplants and CAR-T cell treatments. The program is jointly FACT accredited with the adult BMT program at Mayo Clinic Arizona and has been rated +1 (outperforming outcomes and survival) by CIBMTR for the last four consecutive years.

The program is a COG-approved transplant site, actively participates in cooperative group trials through the PTCTC, PIDTC, and the Sickle Cell consortium, and offers several institutional investigator-initiated clinical trials. The section chief will co-lead a state-of-the-art GMP-compliant cellular therapy facility under development and pursue novel, innovative point-of-care cellular therapies.

The successful candidate will be a member of the Department of Child Health at the University of Arizona-College of Medicine Phoenix and Mayo Clinic Arizona, at the academic rank of Associate Professor or Professor.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care services on an inpatient and outpatient basis, including subspecialty consultations, diagnostic and therapeutic services, and urgent/emergent care.
• Oversee the Clinical and Quality programs in BMT and Cell Therapy at CCBD.
• Participate in collaborative efforts with the adult BMT program at Mayo Clinic.
• Share inpatient and night call responsibilities on the BMT service.
• Develop a translational and/or laboratory research program relevant to stem cell transplantation and cellular therapy.
• Teach medical students from the University of Arizona, Mayo Medical School, Creighton University School of Medicine-Phoenix, Phoenix Children’s residents, and Hem/Onc fellows.
• Support the medical education programs and research endeavors of the division.
• Support programmatic growth and satellite efforts of the division.
• Mentor trainees, fellows, and faculty in program development and academic productivity.
• Represent Phoenix Children’s in the medical and business communities.
• Adhere to divisional patient safety, quality of care standards, and evidence-based medicine practices.
• Support the hospital’s patient satisfaction goals and mission of providing family-centered care.

Requirements

• Board certification by the American Board of Pediatrics, subspecialty Pediatric Hematology/Oncology.
• Several years of experience in the clinical care of pediatric stem cell transplant patients.
• Prior experience with academic leadership.
• Track record of obtaining external funding (for candidates with an active bench-to-bedside research program).
• National recognition as a leader in stem cell transplantation and cellular therapies.
• Strong interest in mentoring and program development.
• Current Arizona License to Practice Medicine or ability to obtain prior to start date.
• Ability to work well under pressure and perform after-hours or night call responsibilities as needed.
