Responsibilities

  • Provides pre-, inter-, intra-, and post-procedure support for the endoscopy team, including competency in the care of patients and family members.
  • Demonstrates competency in providing age-appropriate patient care.
  • Communicates and documents clinical findings to the nurse; ensures all biopsies are handed off to the RN for processing.
  • Pre-cleans endoscopes in-room using specified detergent and suction; transports dirty scopes to the cleaning room.
  • Completes leak testing of all scopes prior to submersion in water; brushes and scrubs endoscopes in a detergent solution before placing them in the Automated Endoscope Reprocessor (AER).
  • Ensures scopes are high-level disinfected using the AER with predetermined settings; hangs scopes in the cabinet after processing.
  • Assists the nurse in patient care, including taking vital signs, setting up monitors, and obtaining supplies, specimens, and medications.
  • Serves as a resource and preceptor for new endoscopy techs; completes orientation checklists and trains on technical aspects of procedures (e.g., snares, biopsies, supplies).
  • Properly utilizes supplies and equipment by opening only when needed, cleaning/disinfecting per protocol, and ensuring cost-effective use.
  • Maintains appropriate supply levels, verifies expiration dates, and reports faulty equipment for repair or replacement.
  • Admits, discharges, and transfers patients within the Endoscopy Center.
  • Safely positions and transports patients, ensuring lines are not disrupted and skin integrity is maintained.
  • Ensures patients are correctly positioned for procedures.

Requirements

  • Gastroenterology Associate certification required within 18 months of hire.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.

Skills

  • Ability to use visual near and distance acuity.
  • Verbal communication skills for in-person, phone, or radio interactions.
  • Physical ability to assist in transfers, transport supplies/patients/equipment, and use proper body mechanics.
  • Functional range of motion in the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spines, upper and lower extremities, with a grip strength of 60-80 pounds.
  • Ability to forward reach, overhead reach, bend, squat, kneel, and change positions rapidly.
  • Capacity to lift 25-60 lbs. and carry 25-50 lbs.
  • Tolerance for high noise, busy atmospheres, and noxious odors.
  • Ability to work in noisy environments and remain self-directed.
  • Calm under stressful situations; ability to assess and respond to multiple situations simultaneously.
  • Ability to assist co-workers in overlapping tasks and prioritize job duties efficiently.
