About the role

The EMT-B is responsible for providing safe and efficient response, treatment, and transport of all people requesting or requiring emergent or non-emergent medical services.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver quality patient care in accordance with clinical policies, statewide protocol, and standards of care.
  • Assess injuries/illnesses and provide basic life support (BLS) on scene and during transport in accordance with statewide treatment protocols.
  • Attend to all patients in a courteous, professional manner.
  • Operate the ambulance in accordance with safety rules and regulations, company policies, and federal, state, and local laws.
  • Complete a vehicle and equipment checklist at the beginning of each assigned shift; inspect and clean the assigned vehicle and all equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with minimum stock requirements, proper function, and cleanliness of all equipment.
  • Accurately record patient care, ensuring completion and submission of required paperwork and PCR documentation daily.
  • Provide appropriate documentation of patient intervention in the pre-hospital setting.
  • Communicate and interact effectively with minimal supervision using good judgment, common sense, and leadership ability.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of the principles of emergency medical services at the basic level.
  • Communicate and interact effectively and professionally with patients, EMS agencies, physicians, hospital personnel, emergency service providers, fire department personnel, and the general public.
  • Attend all mandated company training functions and submit proof of completing equivalent training in a timely fashion.
  • Maintain knowledge of and comply with all company policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Maintain all required certifications as an active EMS provider and supply valid copies of all certifications and driver’s license prior to expiration.
  • Maintain a reliable attendance record.
  • Perform daily housekeeping duties at all assigned bases of operation.
  • Complete other duties as requested and assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Current MA Basic EMT certification in good standing by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Department of Public Health (DPH), Office of Emergency Medical Services (OEMS).
  • Current BLS/CPR healthcare provider level certification, including SAED Authorization.
  • Current valid driver’s license.
  • 0-1 years of related work experience required; 2-4 years of prior experience preferred.
  • Experience with computer systems, including web-based applications and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Ability to meet the essential duties and physical, mental, and sensory requirements of the position at all times.
  • Comply with UDS drug screening at any and all times.
  • Satisfactory background check and MA CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information) verification required annually.
  • Verification of an acceptable motor vehicle driving record required annually.

Skills

  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.
  • Analytical skills to gather and interpret data in routine situations.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment while working in a stressful environment.
  • Previous driving experience in a commercial setting a plus.
  • Commitment to providing exemplary customer service.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met and maintained by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

  • Ability to lift and maneuver 125+ pounds with assistance and without difficulty.
  • Ability to ascend/descend stairs repeatedly and lift and carry 125+ pounds up and down stairs.
  • Frequently use fingers, hands, and arms to reach, handle, and/or operate equipment, objects, tools, or controls.
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to walk without difficulty and without affecting job-related duties.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, and crawl as necessary.
  • Occasionally work in low light and confined spaces.
  • Work within a mobile environment, both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry conditions.
  • Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials.
