12-month full-time, non-exempt position in the EMS Department funded through an IHS Contract.

Qualifications

  • At least 18 years old, sober, of good character, physically fit, and a high school graduate or GED holder.
  • Possess and maintain a New Mexico approved Emergency Medical Technician-Basic training certificate/license.
  • Valid New Mexico driver’s license and CPR card.
  • Ability to maintain composure during emergencies and make on-the-spot medical decisions following established protocols.
  • Fluency in English and Navajo preferred.
  • Must attend a New Mexico approved EMT-Intermediate Training Course and attempt the certification exam within two years of hire.
  • Must pass a full criminal background check.
  • Understand and accept on-call responsibilities for emergency response (waived for employees living off the reservation with no compensation for the $50.00 phone base stipend).

Preferential consideration for employment will be given to persons of documented Navajo, American Indian, or Alaskan Native Tribal membership who meet the qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Perform emergency procedures at the EMT-Basic level, including:
    • Emergency driving techniques and use of EMS Statewide Communications Network.
    • Use of airway adjunctive equipment, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and non-invasive emergency procedures.
    • Use of multi-lumen airways (combi tube or PTL), splinting, and wound management.
    • Monitoring blood glucose with automated glucometer and semi-automatic defibrillation.
    • Assist with self-administration of patient’s own lifesaving medications under direct medical control (e.g., nitroglycerine, inhalation devices for bronchospasm, epinephrine for anaphylaxis).
    • Use of pulse oximetry and emergency childbirth (normal and abnormal presentation).
    • Administer allowable EMT-Basic medications, including activated charcoal, acetylsalicylic acid, acetaminophen, and oral glucose.
  • Receive incoming EMS telephone and radio communications and dispatch as required.
  • Maintain emergency equipment and clinical areas.
  • Assist with other clinical functions such as screening or medical records.
  • Complete daily EMS activity logs and ambulance run reports.
  • Restock ambulance and exam rooms, and clean ambulance after runs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Pay

Grade I, ANSB General Scale. Employees accepting the on-call requirement receive an additional $2.50 per hour as scheduled by the supervisor, plus a $50.00 base telephone stipend.

Schedule

80 hours per pay period, with alternating schedules including days, evenings, nights, and weekends. One-hour flexible lunch break.

Special Conditions

  • This is a child-sensitive position subject to fingerprinting and a criminal/character background investigation.
  • EMT-Intermediate Training Course may be attempted at the employee’s discretion.
