About the role
Delivers timely and effective emergency medical care to patients of all ages in both emergency and nonemergency situations, ensuring stabilization and/or resuscitation as needed due to illness or injury. Responds to ambulance calls, follows established system protocols and NIMS standards for scene management, and accurately document all care provided.
Responsibilities
- Rapidly assess patients and provide lifesaving care according to protocol.
- Initiate basic airway management and assist with patient-assisted medications as needed.
- Provide direct patient care in pre-hospital and hospital settings within the EMT scope of practice.
- Provide age-appropriate care across neonate, infant, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations.
- Operate ambulance safely; transport sick or injured persons while avoiding motions detrimental to patients.
- Cover on-call hours and staff special events as directed to meet departmental needs.
- Perform daily/weekly vehicle and rig checks; maintain, restock and clean unit after each run.
- Manage EMS inventory; maintain pagers, radios and other equipment; report discrepancies and maintenance needs.
- Complete patient care documentation after each call and in the Emergency Department as needed.
- Participate in peer review and chart audits.
- Train and mentor EMT students; assist in orientation of new EMTs; provide education to staff and the public as requested.
Requirements
- Must possess a comprehensive understanding of the EMT scope of practice, including all clinical procedures, patient care standards, and legal/regulatory requirements governing emergency medical services.
- Demonstrate proficiency in recognizing limitations of the role and collaborating with other healthcare professionals to ensure safe, high-quality patient care.
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
- Graduate of an approved Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course with a current Iowa EMT certification, based on role and service area.
- Maintain a valid driver’s license and an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report, meeting all organizational motor vehicle safety standards.
- Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter – Child and/or Dependent Adult Abuse training within three (3) months of hire.
- National Incident Management System (NIMS) - 100 (preferred).
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) within 6 months of hire.
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) as applicable.
- Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC) or equivalent within 1 year of hire.
Qualifications
- Minimum of one year of relevant experience preferred.
- Current CPR certification required.
Skills

- Basic computer skills for documentation and record-keeping.
