Job Summary

To provide a 24-hour emergency and non-emergency ambulance service with state-approved personnel. Secondary duties include maintaining up-to-date knowledge of Missouri laws governing ambulances and personnel. Supports the Village's mission, values, and service/hospitality (PRIDE) expectations.

About the Role

Completes training hours as required by policy. Essential Job Functions include administering basic life support, responding to dispatcher instructions, monitoring communication equipment, removing or assisting in removal of victims, determining nature and extent of illness or injury, communicating with medical personnel, assisting treatment center personnel, adhering to safety regulations, handling stress, and maintaining acceptable workplace conduct.

Essential Job Functions

  • Administers basic life support to and transports sick or injured persons to medical facilities, working as part of an emergency medical team.
  • Responds to dispatcher instructions and drives emergency vehicles to specified locations.
  • Maintains contact with dispatchers through communication equipment.
  • Determines nature and extent of illnesses or injuries, follows medical protocols, or requests additional assistance based on victim statements, examinations, and emergency medical knowledge.
  • Administers prescribed basic life support at the scene or in specially equipped vehicles, including applying splints, administering oxygen, treating minor wounds or abrasions, and administering artificial respiration.
  • Communicates with medical personnel at treatment facilities to obtain further treatment instructions and arrange for victim reception.
  • Aids treatment center admitting personnel in obtaining and recording vital statistics and emergency details.
  • Maintains vehicles and medical and communication equipment, refills first aid supplies, and assists medical personnel during emergency treatments.
  • Adheres to safety regulations and maintains acceptable workplace conduct.

Education & Certifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Missouri State EMT-B and CPR certifications required.
  • Missouri Class E driver’s license or equivalent.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Basic keyboarding skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Experience with investigations of incidents and conflicts.
  • Experience using an ambulance.
  • Experience using an oxygen tank, airways, suction equipment, respirators, and heart monitors.
  • Ability to define and interpret documents.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
  • Excellent customer service skills.

Special Working Conditions

  • Subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions.
  • Subject to extreme cold temperatures and extreme heat.
  • Subject to noise levels that require shouting to be heard.
  • Subject to vibration of extremities or whole body.
  • Subject to hazards such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical currents, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat, exposure to chemicals, and exposure to infectious diseases.
  • Subject to atmospheric conditions affecting the respiratory system.
  • Subject to air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids.
  • Subject to claustrophobic environments.
  • Subject to narrow aisles or passageways.
  • Subject to confined spaces.

Physical and Mental Demands

  • Very heavy work – exerting in excess of 100 lbs of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 lbs of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 lbs of force constantly to move objects.
  • Visual acuity to operate motor vehicles or heavy equipment.
  • Climbing: ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms.
  • Body agility is emphasized.
  • Balancing: maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces.
  • Stooping/bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching.
  • Standing: remaining upright on the feet, particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Walking: moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
  • Pushing, pulling, lifting with regular or repetitive motion.
  • Picking up, pinching, typing with fingers, grasping with fingers and palm.
  • Feeling attributes of an object such as size, shape, temperature, or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
  • Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; those activities where detailed or important spoken instructions must be conveyed to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Hearing: perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction, and having the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and making fine discriminations in sound.
  • Repetitive motions: making substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

Supervision Received/Given

  • Supervision from Public Safety Supervisor or Public Safety Manager.
  • No direct supervision given.
