Responsibilities

  • Performs evaluation and assessment of patients efficiently and effectively.
  • Conducts rapid primary surveys and accurate secondary surveys.
  • Assesses and monitors pain; uses and recommends appropriate pain management techniques.
  • Makes appropriate judgments regarding patients’ needs, medical interventions, and results.
  • Reviews, discusses, and implements healthcare provider orders; takes appropriate measures if there are questions.
  • Recognizes abnormal symptoms or changes in patient condition, establishes priorities, and takes appropriate action.
  • Serves as a patient advocate.
  • Demonstrates personal accountability in delivering patient care in a competent, professional, and compassionate manner.
  • Renders emergency and non-emergency medical care services under the direct supervision of a physician or registered nurses.
  • Obtains information regarding the mechanism of injury.
  • Utilizes the Out-of-hospital trauma triage destination decision protocol.
  • Performs all First Responder Level, EMT-Basic Level, and EMT-Intermediate level emergency medical skills.
  • Performs EMT-Paramedic level skills identified in the U.S. D.O.T. EMT-P curriculum, including:
    • Endotracheal intubation
    • Pharmacological intervention
    • Maintenance and monitoring of intravenous infusion of blood and blood products
    • Tension pneumothorax and chest decompression
    • Cricothyrotomy and transtracheal insufflation
    • Gastric tube and nasogastric tube insertion
    • Rotating tourniquets
    • Urinary catheterization
    • Intraosseous infusion
  • Provides pre-hospital stabilization of severely injured patients, including assessment, extrication, resuscitation initiation, and rapid transportation.
  • Provides medical services at emergency scenes, during transportation, in hospital emergency departments, and during transfers between facilities or to private homes.
  • Fulfills roles and responsibilities of a Trauma Team Member.
  • Maintains ambulance in proper working condition, ensuring it is stocked and ready at all times.
  • Performs routine vehicle, equipment, and supply checklists at the start of each shift; maintains supply levels.
  • Keeps ambulances and garage area clean and clear of debris.
  • Communicates effectively with clear, concise reports on patient status and ETA.
  • Collaborates with other health team members.
  • Identifies and reports abnormal symptoms or changes in patient condition to medical providers.
  • Completes accurate patient reports after each call with all required signatures.
  • Collaborates with healthcare providers to coordinate medical and nursing management of patient care.
  • Promotes a team concept through effective communication regarding patient condition, care plans, and satisfaction.
  • Works effectively with ancillary areas as part of a team approach to patient care.
  • Directs patient support team members effectively and appropriately.
  • Demonstrates initiative and flexibility in patient care provision.
  • Informs and involves management regarding patient care issues in a timely manner.
  • Assists in patient assignments, coordinating admissions, and meeting staffing needs.
  • Collaborates with the Care Plan team.
  • Completes patient and family education throughout the patient’s stay and at discharge.
  • Performs emergency treatment within the scope of practice.
  • Initiates or assists in patient care effectively and responsively.
  • Triages emergency situations appropriately and involves other resources as needed.
  • Administers and performs emergent care for patients ranging from newborn to geriatrics.
  • Follows emergency policies, procedures, and protocols effectively.
  • Documents accurate and ongoing assessments of patient status, reflecting nursing interventions, patient responses, and teaching.
  • Completes shift-end checks before leaving duty.
  • Maintains EMT-P, BCLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications.
  • Promotes and ensures patient and staff safety in all aspects of responsibilities.
  • Administers medications, treatments, and procedures safely and timely according to healthcare provider orders and nursing policy.
  • Uses proper body mechanics and transfer/lifting techniques to minimize fall risk and injury.
  • Implements infectious disease controls, including isolation procedures, hand washing, and glove use.
  • Follows proper procedures for wasting narcotics and disposal of sharps and hazardous materials.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Maintains current EMT-Paramedic certification.
  • Holds and maintains BCLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications.
