EMS Academy
About the role
The Emergency Medical Services Academy – EMT Class is a 12-week program designed to prepare participants for EMT certification in the State of New York. Upon successful completion, graduates will be eligible to work as emergency medical technicians (EMTs) with Empress EMS.
Responsibilities
- Complete a state-approved education program in Emergency Medical Technology
- Pass a cognitive and practical exam
- Obtain a license to practice in the State of New York
- Work on the frontlines of Empress EMS providing emergency treatment to the sick and injured
- Participate in career development opportunities within the organization, including logistics, community paramedic division, quality improvement, special operations division, and the emergency communications center
- Take advantage of the Empress EMS paramedic scholarship program to advance their career
Requirements
- A valid Driver’s License
- Satisfactory completion of all aspects of the pre-employment process administered by Empress Ambulance Service, LLC., including drug screening, background check, and physical agility test (CPAT)
- At least 19 years of age
- A High School Diploma or equivalent
- Completion of AWR160, IS 100c, IS 200c, IS 700b, Empress EMS Required Training, NYS Mandated Reporter, IS 906, IS 907
Qualifications
Graduates must have a high school diploma or equivalent, be at least 19 years old, and complete the necessary training and prerequisites as outlined above.
Skills
Strong communication skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team, and the ability to handle stressful situations are essential.

Work Environment
Primarily in a classroom and/or SIM lab setting, occasionally attending ride-alongs with licensed EMTs and/or Paramedics. Works outdoors and indoors with exposure to hazardous conditions and to blood/body fluids, requiring respirator use, fumes/odors, extended days, and temperature changes. Frequent face-to-face contact with others, exposure to noise, mechanical equipment, and electrical equipment. Performs shift work and works in a mobile environment and confined areas.
