Emergency Vehicle Technician

This position is a federally regulated DOT role subject to random drug and alcohol testing. The use of medical marijuana is prohibited.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED and five years of journeyman-level experience in the maintenance, repair, and computerized diagnosis of medium/heavy duty trucks; or
• Associate’s degree in automotive technology or a related field and two years of hands-on automotive experience; or
• An equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Knowledge of standard practices, methods, materials, and tools used in the repair of medium/heavy trucks.
• Familiarity with the design, operation, and repair of heavy-duty diesel engines and diesel equipment.
• Ability to lift items up to 50 pounds and stand for prolonged periods.

Special Requirements

• Must provide own tools.
• Must possess or obtain within nine months of employment:
  • Virginia State Inspection Certificate
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
  • EPA-Approved Section 609 Refrigerant and Recovery Certification
• Current Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications preferred.
• Valid driver’s license and good driving record required:
  • No more than five demerit points within the 24 months preceding hire.
  • No major violation (six demerit points) within the preceding 36 months.
  • Out-of-state records must be obtained by applicant, reflect at least three years of history, and be dated within 30 days of interview.
• Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check, and education/degree verification required.

Responsibilities

• Examine vehicles and communicate the nature and extent of damage or malfunction.
• Diagnose emergency vehicle problems and plan work procedures using charts, technical manuals, and computerized diagnostic equipment.
• Perform state safety inspections, conduct road service calls, and test drive vehicles.
• Prepare and maintain records and reports concerning repairs of equipment.
• Perform daily and monthly preventive maintenance and repair of diesel engine trucks to ensure compliance with state and federal safety guidelines and regulations.
• Repair tasks include but are not limited to:
  • Diesel engines
  • Fuel systems
  • Electrical/electronic systems
  • Power train
  • Suspension
  • Air brakes
  • Steering
  • Hydraulics
  • Pumps
  • HVAC systems
  • Exhaust systems
• Perform other work as required.
• Willingness to work assigned shift, including on-call after hours (evenings and weekends).
• Designated personnel for adverse weather and emergency events; occasional work in adverse weather conditions and/or extreme temperatures.

Schedule

Monday – Friday; 6:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.; rotating on-call after hours required (evenings and weekends).
