Emergency Telecommunicator

About the Role

Under direct supervision, facilitates emergency and routine public safety communications between the general public, public safety responders, and their respective support agencies. Utilizes specialized radio, telephone, and computer systems to prevent or lessen the likelihood of loss of life or property.

Responsibilities

• Responds to telephone, Text-2-911, and TTY/TDD calls from the public, supported agencies, and outside agencies for emergency assistance, routine assistance, and general information. Initiates calls to facilitate information exchange as required.
• Identifies and coordinates Emergency Fire Dispatch (EFD), Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD), and Emergency Police Dispatch (EPD) calls, including guiding callers through basic medical/first aid, scene, and personal safety steps until responders arrive.
• Uses a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) System to enter calls for service, track responder status, and add pertinent information. Prioritizes calls and monitors responder activities.
• Conducts research on names, locations, phone numbers, vehicles, and property related to fire, law enforcement, and medical situations.
• Tracks responders using telephone, radio, CAD, and GPS mapping systems to ensure expedient dispatch of appropriate responders.
• Utilizes various radio frequencies to communicate with government and civilian entities for emergency and routine calls.
• Coordinates information flow between public safety responders and support agencies (e.g., malfunctioning traffic signals, tow truck requests).
• Uses the Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) to inquire about persons, property, driver’s licenses, vehicle registration, and criminal history.
• Ensures accuracy and completeness of gathered information through quality control.
• Activates Emergency Warning Systems to alert residents of imminent danger or disseminate critical information upon request.
• Maintains required certifications, licenses, and professional development through continuing education, training, conferences, and seminars.
• Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and background investigation in accordance with Wyoming Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission rules.
• Ability to work shift work, holidays, and weekends as required.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of dispatch and emergency response processes and activities.
• Knowledge of dispatch technology and tools, including CAD systems.
• Knowledge of emergency response standards and protocol, including EFD, EMD, and EPD practices.
• Knowledge of law enforcement, fire suppression, and emergency medical terminology and practices.
• Knowledge of weather watch and warning systems.
• Skill in coordinating dispatch and emergency response assistance.
• Skill in providing instructions or information pertinent to citizen and officer well-being.
• Skill in utilizing telephone, radio, and CAD systems for expedient dispatch.
• Skill in liaising with internal and external parties for dispatch services.
• Skill in ensuring accuracy and completeness of dispatch information.
• Skill in monitoring and maintaining emergency response systems.
