- Primary work is of a nature requiring medical, fire, technical and administrative skills in the operations and oversight of the varied emergency planning, emergency response and emergency recovery of disaster programs of the County. Organizes, coordinates and maintains preparedness of County Emergency and Disaster Services and systems. Employee exercises independent judgment and discretion in decision making in providing emergency management services under the direct authority of County Emergency Services Director.

Duties

  • Responds to various emergencies that may be medical or fire related, incidents man-made as well as environmental such as severe weather-related emergencies
  • Responsible for completion of all required EMS reports, fire reports, and other documentation as assigned in a timely manner
  • Responsible for maintaining operational Emergency Services facilities readiness 24 hours a day, seven days a week inclusive of buildings, fleet, equipment, grounds, and communications
  • Captures and coordinates daily checklist of facility and equipment
  • Affords assistance in coordinating all phases of emergency response
  • Willing to provide emergency services education for both the public and private entities, including groups and individuals
  • Participates in meetings on emergency services matters by sharing information, experiences and responding to job related questions
  • Exercises good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions
  • Responsible for retrieving and confining stray animals
  • Acts as liaison with the ability support other departments, agencies, and organizations
  • Attendance is required

Required Qualifications

  • MUST have at a minimum and maintain a valid - Iowa Paramedic License - OR - Critical Care Paramedic License
  • Must have two years’ working experience in a 911 based service
  • Possess a valid driver’s license with no restrictions and proof of insurance
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent
  • Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
  • Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Current Adult and Child Mandatory Reporter Training
  • Have and maintain all other required certifications and documents required by the Emergency Services Department, Medical Director, and the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) and Iowa Board of Pharmacy and continuously monitor these requirements as they are subject to change
  • Able to successfully pass; physical examination, back screen, vision, hearing test, DOT drug screen and background check
  • Preferred Not Required Have or willing to obtain Firefighter I certification and or training to the level of firefighter I Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS)
  • Minimum Education and Experience Required Performing Essential Functions: (cont.)
  • Must have knowledge of the proper use of communication systems
  • Ability to exercise tact, discretion, and confidentiality
  • Ability to coordinate and work with multiple departments
  • Must have flexibility and be willing to work assigned hours, as part of a 24/7/365 work schedule, or as assigned by the Director as needed
  • Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees, rural departments, public officials, and the citizens
  • Ability to prepare accurate reports
  • Ability to follow directions and direct the use of resources
  • Affords assistance in coordinating emergency services response under extraordinary circumstances
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions
  • Ability to instruct and train other Emergency Services staff, volunteers and public is helpful
  • Physical ability to lift 50-85 pounds.
