Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of patient care functions under the supervision of licensed personnel in an urgent care or emergency medical setting.
  • Provide technical support to optimize patient care as directed by physicians and nurses.
  • Report patient conditions to appropriate supervisors and staff members.
  • Coordinate and assist with patient flow, including specimen collection and treatments within the scope of the position.
  • Utilize critical thinking skills to enhance patient flow and maintain high standards of care.
  • Assist in training new Emergency Department Technicians and mentor staff under the direction of RNs or Providers.
  • Assist with resuscitation, CPR, and emergency airway procedures.
  • Obtain and document vital signs, including oxygen saturation, cardiac monitoring, and non-invasive blood pressure.
  • Perform technical functions such as obtaining 12-lead EKGs, discontinuing peripheral IVs, phlebotomy, specimen collection, and Point of Care Testing.
  • Manage, order, and decontaminate equipment, instruments, and supplies.
  • Participate in the Emergency Decontamination Team.
  • Assist with patient positioning, application of orthopedic splints, and dressings.
  • Measure and fit crutches and canes; instruct patients on proper use.
  • Maintain and monitor medical equipment and supplies for expiration dates.
  • Participate in team meetings and in-services as needed.
  • Assist with unit admission and discharge processes.
  • Communicate significant changes in patient condition to the healthcare team.
  • Respond to patient requests and call lights promptly.
  • Maintain a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients and families.
  • Function effectively in emergency situations.
  • Assist with restrained patients according to established policies.
  • Provide direct observation for patients at risk of self-harm or harming others.
  • Support Environment of Care (EOC) safety checks.
  • Monitor and record temperatures for specimen refrigerators daily; respond to out-of-range temperatures.
  • Assist with activities of daily living (ADLs), including toileting, hygiene, intake/output monitoring, meal serving, and feeding.
  • Provide mobility activities, including range of motion exercises, transferring, and ambulating patients.
  • Use proper body mechanics and appropriate equipment when lifting, moving, or transferring patients.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication with patients, families, visitors, and hospital staff.
  • Complete unit-specific and department competency requirements.
  • Manage cardiac monitor alarms.
  • Attend relevant educational and training programs.
  • Perform similar or related duties as requested or directed.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED (preferred).
  • One year of patient care experience (preferred).
  • BLS certification required within 6 months of hire.

Physical Requirements

  • Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, up to 50 lbs. frequently, and up to 20 lbs. constantly to move objects.
  • Occasional: Balancing, climbing, crouching, grasping, kneeling.
  • Frequent: Visual acuity (color, depth, perception), stooping, standing, repetitive motion, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting.
  • Constant: Typing/clerical/dexterity, hearing, seeing/monitor/computer use, talking, walking, fit testing.

Hazards

  • Occasional: Burns, chemical, electrical, explosives, mechanical, radiation/radiant energy.
  • Frequent: Bodily fluids/bloodborne exposure.

Working Conditions

  • Occasional: Extreme temperatures, vibration, wet/humid conditions, dust, gases, mists.
  • Frequent: Fumes, odors.
  • Constant: Noise.

Occasional travel may be required.

Pay

Salary is based on qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, training, and fair market evaluation. Pay range: $17.67–$26.50 per hour.
