Emergency Room Technician

About the Role

Assists licensed staff in the provision of basic nursing care in the Emergency Department, utilizing established policies and procedures to ensure safe and effective care.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and document vital signs
  • Measure and record input and output
  • Perform electrocardiograms
  • Use good body mechanics
  • Follow established safety, infection control, environmental, and isolation practices and procedures
  • Communicate with a wide variety of people from diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds under stressful conditions
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all personnel contacted in the course of duties
  • Efficient, effective, and safe use of equipment

Requirements

  • Equivalent to graduation from high school
  • One (1) year of experience in an emergency department setting
  • Basic EKG course within three (3) months of hire
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Preferences will be given to applicants who document the following:

  • A minimum of three (3) years of recent experience (within past 5 years) in an emergency department setting as an ER Tech or EMS

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • Operation of general office equipment
  • Basic medical terminology, anatomy, heart functions, and rhythms
  • Placement of leads for electrocardiograms
  • Basic mathematics
  • Medical equipment and universal precautions
  • Department and hospital safety practices and procedures
  • Patient rights and age-specific patient care practices
  • Infection control policies and practices
  • Handling, storage, use, and disposal of hazardous materials
  • Department and hospital emergency response policies and procedures

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Mobility to work in a typical clinical setting and use standard equipment
  • Stamina to remain standing and/or walk for extended periods of time
  • Strength to assist in the examination and treatment of varied patients
  • Vision to read printed materials and a VDT screen
  • Hearing and speech to communicate effectively in person and over the telephone
  • Strength and agility to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects
