About the role

Seeking Emergency Medicine physicians for permanent full-time and part-time positions at Cowichan District Hospital. The ED sees around 125 visits per day. In addition to regular ED shifts, there is a Rapid Access and Diagnostic Virtual Unit (RADU) that manages patients meeting strict criteria likely to be discharged within 24 hrs of admission; RADU physicians also support the ED. The group provides double coverage from 09:00 to 01:00 daily and triple coverage from 11:00 to 19:30. Physicians work ED shifts (Day, Afternoon, Early Evening, Late Evening, Overnight) as well as RADU shifts. The group is affiliated with UBC’s Island Medical Program, teaching medical students and residents on certain shifts, and serves as the pre‑deployment readiness site for military physicians and PAs. The Cowichan medical community is tightly knit with strong collegial relationships across acute and community settings, an active Division of Family Practice and Medical Staff Association, and involvement in planning for the new Cowichan District Hospital (expected completion 2027, 203 beds, 185 operational at opening, expanded OR and ICU).

Responsibilities

Work Emergency Department shifts (Day, Afternoon, Early Evening, Late Evening, Overnight)
Work Rapid Access and Diagnostic Virtual Unit (RADU) shifts
Support the Emergency Department as a RADU physician
Teach medical students and residents (limited to certain shifts)
Serve as pre‑deployment readiness site for military physicians and PAs
Participate in planning for the new Cowichan District Hospital

Requirements

Emergency Medicine physicians with CCFP‑EM or FRCP certification.

Retention Premium: 4.2%
Retention Flat Fee: $6,509
Relocation Funding: up to a maximum of $15,000 (amount based on location relocating from)
Recruitment Incentive: up to a maximum of $10,000 (pro-rated based on FTE)

Schedule
